Chapter 4 - The Paper Guillotine

The gala guests began whispering furiously, pulling out their phones to record the scene.
"You're lying!" Adrian yelled, stepping between me and the federal marshals. "She's unstable! She just had children, she's suffering from postpartum psychosis!"
My father, Arthur Vance, stepped through the doorway, buttoning his jacket. The room gasped. Several prominent investors instantly recognized the legendary trial attorney who had put three state governors in prison for corruption.
"Mr. Miller," Arthur Vance said, his voice quiet, cold, and heavy as iron. "I suggest you exercise your right to remain silent before my legal team adds federal slander to your indictment list."
"Arthur... Vance?" Adrian whispered, his knees visibly shaking as his mind desperately tried to connect the dots. "You're... you're her father?"
"For six years," I said, looking Adrian straight in the eye, "you called me naive. You told me I didn't understand finance, that I was sheltered, useless, and ugly. You never bothered to look up my maiden name because your arrogance convinced you that anyone who loved you must be beneath you."
My mother stepped forward, sliding a white document directly into Adrian’s hands.
"This is an emergency injunction freezing all bank accounts, credit lines, and corporate assets associated with Apex Global Logistics," Eleanor stated smoothly. "Furthermore, the Board of Directors of your primary lender—which my trust purchased seventy percent of at 8:00 AM this morning—has called in your twelve-million-dollar debt with immediate effect."
Vanessa’s eyes went wide with pure terror. She turned to Adrian, grabbing his arm violently. "Adrian! What is she talking about?! Pay them! Use the company funds!"
"There are no company funds, Vanessa," I revealed, giving her a sweet, cold smile. "The company's liquid reserves were tied to the children’s trust—which I legally revoked forty-five minutes ago under the provisions of our prenuptial agreement."
The federal marshals stepped forward, clicking heavy steel handcuffs onto Adrian’s wrists right in front of his investors, the press, and his mistress.
"Adrian Miller, you are under arrest for grand larceny, identity theft, and corporate fraud."

As they pulled Adrian away, he screamed at Vanessa: "Call your father! Call Richard! Help me!"
Vanessa stood frozen in the center of the room, surrounded by police officers, her emerald gown ruined by spilled champagne, her precious Birkin bag tumbling onto the floor.
