Chapter 9 - The Trial's Final Echo

In October, the federal trial of Adrian Miller and Vanessa Cross reached its final conclusion.

Neither of them had the funds or the evidence to mount a defense. Vanessa entered a guilty plea to conspiracy to commit grand larceny and was sentenced to three years in a federal correctional facility, alongside full financial restitution orders that stripped her of all personal wealth.

Adrian was convicted on five counts of felony fraud, forgery, and embezzlement. The judge, citing his utter lack of remorse and the cruel circumstances surrounding his actions at the hospital, sentenced him to twelve years in state prison without eligibility for early parole.

On the day of the sentencing, I sat in the front row of the courtroom, elegant, quiet, and radiant in a cream-colored silk suit.

As the guards led Adrian out in chains, he paused, looking at me sitting beside my parents.

There was no anger left in his eyes—only total, devastating realization of what he had thrown away. He had traded a loyal, brilliant wife, three beautiful children, and an entry into one of the most powerful families in the country for a fake mistress, a stolen handbag, and a prison cell.

I didn't glare at him. I didn't smile in victory. I simply looked at him with complete indifference, as if he were a stranger passing by on a crowded street.

He was pulled through the double doors, and the heavy metal locks clicked shut behind him forever.
