Chapter 5 - SATELLITE CALL FROM THE CARIBBEAN

By 8:00 PM that evening, the story was already blowing up.
With Marcus Vance’s team working alongside Grandpa Arthur’s forensic records, the state court issued an emergency freeze on every single asset owned by my parents—their joint checking accounts, their investment portfolios, and their luxury vehicle titles.
I was upstairs in Grandpa’s guest room, sitting in a plush rocking chair, nursing Noah under the warm light of a floor lamp.
Downstairs, the house was quiet.
Suddenly, Grandpa’s satellite telephone on the desk began ringing loudly.
I laid Noah down in his crib, walked down the grand staircase, and entered the library where Grandpa was already waiting by the phone. He pressed the speaker button.
"ARTHUR!" my mother’s voice screamed through the static-heavy speaker, cutting through the quiet house like a saw through metal. "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?! WHAT IS GOING ON?!"
Grandpa sat down comfortably in his chair, taking a slow sip of tea. "Good evening, Eleanor. How is the cruise?"
"DON'T YOU DARE TALK ABOUT THE CRUISE!" Mom shrieked, her voice garbled by the ocean satellite connection. "The ship purser came to our cabin an hour ago with two security guards! They told us our cards were frozen by a court order! They took away our room keys! They moved us out of our VIP Owner’s Suite and put us in a windowless crew cabin near the engine room!"
Grandpa raised an eyebrow. "A windowless cabin? Well, at least you have shelter, Eleanor. Emily spent last night in a hospital room with three broken ribs."
"I DON'T CARE ABOUT HER RIBS!" my mother roared, completely abandoning any remaining pretense of maternal care. "She ruined everything! She stopped her transfer! Chloe called me crying from a police station in Boston saying she was questioned by state prosecutors! Did Emily do this?! Tell that ungrateful brat to lift the freeze right now!"
I stepped up to the desk, pulled the microphone closer to my face, and spoke clearly into the line.
"I'm right here, Mom."
The line went dead silent for three long seconds. The distant hum of ship engines vibrated through the speaker.
"Emily?" my mother’s voice dropped, trying desperately to regain control, shifting back into her familiar manipulative tone. "Emily, honey... listen to me. There’s been a terrible misunderstanding. Chloe was confused. I was confused yesterday when you called—I thought you said you had a flat tire! I didn't know it was serious!"
"You told me my sister never has emergencies," I said, my voice dead, flat, and colder than ice. "You hung up on me while I was bleeding on a gurney."
"I was stressed, Emily!" Mom whimpered, fake tears starting to leak into her voice. "Your father and I worked so hard for you girls! Everything I did with the money was to secure our family’s future! You’re successful! You have a high salary! Chloe needed help! As a mother, I had to balance things!"
"You didn't balance things, Mom," I said. "You stole $486,000 from me over nine years. You forged my signature while I was recovering from surgery to steal my $1.75 million inheritance from Grandma. You bought Chloe an $18,000 bag and a $680,000 condo while I drove a broken car and paid strangers to care for my six-week-old baby."
"It was for the family!" she screamed, her calm facade crumbling again into pure rage. "You owe me! I gave birth to you! I raised you! You wouldn't have that high-paying job if I hadn't pushed you! That money belongs to ME!"
"Not anymore, Eleanor," Grandpa Arthur cut in firmly. "When your ship docks in Puerto Rico tomorrow morning at 7:00 AM, Federal Marshals will be waiting on the pier. You and Richard are being served with a federal subpoena for grand larceny, wire fraud, and forgery."
"ARTHUR! NO! YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO YOUR OWN DAUGHTER!" Mom shrieked hysterically.
May you like
"I am doing this for my granddaughter, Eleanor," Grandpa said coldly. "The one you treated like a bank account. Enjoy the rest of your cruise."
Grandpa hit the red button, cutting the line completely.
