Chapter 9 - THE VERDICT

Three weeks later, the jury returned after just two hours of deliberation.
The courtroom was packed to absolute capacity.
My father was sitting behind me on the prosecution side, wearing a neat suit, his divorce from my mother officially finalized two days prior. Grandpa Arthur sat beside him, holding my hand firmly.
My mother stood at the defense table, her hands trembling as Judge Blake read the verdict sheets.
"On Count One: Grand Larceny over $250,000... how do you find the defendant, Eleanor Reid?"
"Guilty," the jury foreman announced clearly.
"On Count Two: Wire Fraud..."
"Guilty."
"On Count Three: Forgery of Legal Trust Documents..."
"Guilty."
"On Count Four: Financial Exploitation of a Dependent..."
"Guilty."
Guilty on all twelve counts.
My mother stood paralyzed, her mouth agape as the clerk recorded the final verdict. She turned frantically toward the gallery, looking for support, but there was no one there for her. Chloe was sitting on the prosecution witness bench, looking away. My father stared straight ahead, refusing to meet her eyes.
Judge Blake looked down at my mother from the bench, her voice stern and unyielding.
"Eleanor Reid," Judge Blake said, "you carried out a systematic, heartless campaign of financial abuse and deceit against your own daughter for nearly a decade. You stole her inheritance, exploited her generosity, and abandoned her in her hour of greatest need without a shred of maternal compassion."
Judge Blake picked up her pen and signed the sentencing order.
"I sentence you to twelve years at the Framingham State Correctional Institution, with no possibility of parole for the first eight years. In addition, all seized real estate, offshore accounts, and liquid assets totaling $2.2 million are hereby permanently restored to the rightful sole owner: Emily Reid."
BANG!
The gavel struck the wood.
My mother shrieked as two court officers immediately stepped up, grabbed her arms, and pulled them behind her back, clicking heavy metal handcuffs around her wrists.

"EMILY!" Mom screamed hysterically, struggling against the guards as they dragged her toward the side holding door. "YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME! I AM YOUR MOTHER! YOU WILL ROT IN HELL FOR THIS! EMILY!"
I stood quietly beside Grandpa Arthur and my father, watching her go until the heavy metal doors slammed shut, cutting off her screams forever.
