Chapter 6 - DAD’S SECRET VISITATION

The next morning, while my mother was being detained by authorities at the port of San Juan, Puerto Rico, a taxi pulled up to the front gate of Grandpa Arthur’s estate in Concord.

I was sitting on the front porch with Noah, enjoying the fresh morning breeze, when my father walked up the gravel driveway alone.

He looked broken.

His hair was unkempt, his eyes were bloodshot and sunken, and he was dragging a small, battered carry-on suitcase. He didn't look like the proud man who had spent the last nine years living in a Brookline mansion. He looked like an old man who had suddenly realized his entire life was built on quicksand.

"Emily..." Dad said, stopping ten feet away at the bottom of the porch steps.

I stayed seated, keeping my arm protectively around Noah. "Where is Mom?"

"She's still in San Juan," Dad said, his voice trembling as he looked down at the gravel. "The marshals seized her passport. She’s staying in a cheap motel near the port waiting for her public defender appointment. I took the first commercial flight back to Boston using the last hundred dollars I had in cash."

Grandpa Arthur walked out onto the porch, holding two cups of coffee. He looked at my father without any surprise.

"Sit down, Richard," Grandpa said quietly, placing a cup on the porch table.

Dad slowly walked up the steps and sat on the wooden bench across from me. He looked at baby Noah sleeping in my lap, tears filling his red eyes.

"Emily," Dad whispered, his voice cracking. "I swear to God... I swear on my life... I didn't know."

"You didn't know?" I asked, my tone sharp. "You lived in that house for nine years, Dad! You knew I was sending $4,500 every single month!"

"She told me it was a gift from your tech company's stock bonus!" Dad cried, grabbing his hair with both hands. "She told me you were making $300,000 a year and that you wanted to help us live comfortably in retirement! She told me my pension was being reinvested into a college fund for your future children!"

Grandpa Arthur set his coffee down and looked at my father sternly. "Richard... did you ever look at the bank statements?"

"No!" Dad sobbed openly now, covering his face. "Eleanor managed all the accounts! Every time I asked to see the financial papers, she threw a massive fit! She called me ungrateful! She said I was trying to control her! I was so afraid of her screaming that I just let her handle everything!"

I looked at my father. For years, I had thought he was a co-conspirator in my mother's cruelty. But seeing him now—shivering, bankrupt, completely manipulated by the woman he had been married to for thirty-five years—I realized he was just another victim of my mother’s narcissistic web.

"Dad," I said softly. "Mom forged my signature on Grandma’s inheritance trust."

Dad raised his head, staring at me in utter disbelief. "What?"

"She took the $1.75 million land trust Grandma left me and transferred it to Chloe," I explained. "She used my $4,500 monthly payments to buy Chloe a luxury condo in South Boston."

Dad sat frozen for a long moment. Then, slowly, he reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a thick gold wedding band, and laid it on the wooden table between us.

"I'm divorcing her," Dad said, his voice turning surprisingly solid. "I'm filing the paperwork today."
