Chapter 7 - THE PRE-TRIAL DRAMA

Four months later.

The Massachusetts Superior Court in downtown Boston was packed with reporters, legal teams, and curious onlookers.

The story of the "Reid Family Betrayal" had become a national news sensation—a dramatic tale of maternal greed, forged inheritances, and a daughter's ultimate legal payback.

I sat at the prosecution table alongside Prosecutor Marcus Vance and Grandpa Arthur. I was wearing a professional charcoal suit, my hair tied back neatly, feeling stronger and healthier than I had in years. Noah was six months old now, staying safely at home with a trusted, highly certified full-time nanny that Grandpa and I had personally hired.

Across the room sat my mother, Eleanor Reid.

She had aged ten years in four months. Her expensive designer clothes were gone, replaced by a simple dark navy suit provided by her legal defense team. Her hair was streaks of gray, and her eyes were filled with bitter, burning resentment whenever she looked across the aisle at me.

Beside her sat Chloe, looking pale and terrified, wearing a plain black dress without a single piece of jewelry.

"All rise for the Honorable Judge Catherine Blake," the bailiff announced.

We stood up as the judge took her seat at the high wooden bench.

My mother's lead defense attorney, a slick corporate lawyer named Thomas Croft, stood up immediately.

"Your Honor," Croft began loudly, stepping up to the lectern. "We move for an immediate dismissal of all grand larceny charges against my client, Eleanor Reid. This is not a criminal matter! This is a tragic family dispute! A mother simply trying to manage family assets and distribute wealth fairly between two daughters!"

Prosecutor Marcus Vance stood up smoothly, holding a heavy binder.

"Fairly, Your Honor?" Vance said, his voice ringing clearly through the courtroom. "By transferring $486,000 from the victim's account directly into an offshore account owned by co-defendant Chloe Reid? By forging the victim's signature on a notarized land trust while the victim was incapacitated in a hospital bed?"

"My client believed she had full power of attorney!" Croft argued back desperately. "She acted out of maternal love!"

"Maternal love?" Vance scoffed, pulling a laminated document from his folder. "We submit into evidence the certified transcripts of the call made from St. Mary’s Hospital on the night of November 12th. When the victim called her mother while bleeding from a major motor vehicle collision, the defendant explicitly stated, and I quote: 'Your sister never has these emergencies... I can't drop everything because you can't keep your life together.'"

Gasping echoed through the gallery. Several reporters scribbled furiously in their notebooks.

My mother slammed her hands onto the defense table. "SHE WAS EXAGGERATING!" Mom shrieked, breaking court protocol. "SHE WAS FINE! SHE JUST WANTED TO RUIN MY VACATION!"

"Silence in the court!" Judge Blake slammed her gavel down with a sharp, thunderous crack. "Mrs. Reid, one more outburst from you and I will have you held in contempt and remanded to custody immediately!"

My mother sank back into her chair, her face turning purple with rage.

Judge Blake looked over her glasses at the defense team, her expression filled with utter disgust.

"Motion to dismiss is denied," Judge Blake ruled coldly. "We will proceed directly to jury selection."
