Chapter 2 - The Lioness Awakens

The next forty-eight hours in the hospital were a whirlwind of legal maneuvers, medical evaluations, and shifting alliances.

Dr. Marcus Vance did not leave my side except when his medical duties absolutely required it. The guilt eating away at him was palpable. He personally arranged for a private security guard to stand outside my room, ensuring neither Julian nor Eleanor Vance could set foot inside.

"I can't undo what my family did to you, Vivian," Marcus said quietly on the second evening, sitting in the chair beside my bed as I nursed my son. "But I can stand on the right side of the truth now."

"Why did Eleanor hate me so much, Marcus?" I asked, looking up. "I loved her son. I gave up my career at the law firm to support his political ambitions and corporate rise. I did everything she asked of me."

Marcus let out a bitter sigh. "Because you were too smart, Vivian. My mother controls everyone in our family through money and secrets. She controlled my father, she controls me through funding my medical research, and she controlled Julian. But you... you were an auditor. You saw through her. She was terrified that eventually, you would look at the Vance Group financial ledgers."

I felt a sharp coldness settle in my stomach. "The shell companies."

Marcus looked up, shocked. "You know about them?"

"I know everything," I said quietly. "Julian thought he was clever when he logged into his private server from our home network before throwing me out. He deleted the shortcut on the desktop, thinking a 'quiet housewife' wouldn't know how to navigate a local drive recovery."

I reached under my pillow and pulled out the small, black USB flash drive I had transferred from the folder under my mattress before heading to the hospital.

"Every illegal transfer. Every offshore account in the Cayman Islands. Every bribe paid to city officials to approve their real estate developments," I continued, holding the drive up. "Julian didn't just want a divorce because he was tired of me. He was preparing to commit corporate fraud, and he needed to bankrupt me and destroy my credibility so that if I ever spoke up, I would look like a bitter, lying ex-wife looking for money."

Marcus stared at the drive in absolute horror. "Vivian... if my mother and Julian find out you have that—"

"They already know I’m not as powerless as they think," I interrupted firmly. "And tomorrow morning, when I get discharged, the real work begins."

"What are you going to name him?" Marcus asked, his voice softening as he looked down at the infant sleeping peacefully in my arms.

I looked down at my son's tiny face, his chest rising and falling rhythmically. He had survived the hardest months of my life right along with me. He had felt every tear, every moment of fear, and every ounce of my determination.

"Leo," I said softly. "His name is Leo. Because he’s a fighter."

"A strong name," Marcus nodded, a sad, respectful smile gracing his face. "Vivian... Eleanor has already called an emergency board meeting for Monday morning. She’s planning to officially announce Julian as the sole CEO of Vance Enterprises, solidifying his control over the family trust before the paternity results formally hit the court record."

"When are the formal DNA results coming in?"

"I expedited them myself," Marcus replied. "They will be certified by the state lab tomorrow at 9:00 AM."

I looked at the USB drive in my hand, then at my son.

"Then Monday morning," I said, "we go to the board meeting."
