Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

A wave of nervous laughter swept through the board members seated near the stage.

"Majority shareholder?" Julian sneered, trying to recover his bravado. "Are you out of your mind, Vivian? You don't own a single share in this company! You're a disgraced laundry worker!"

"Read the room, Julian," Sarah Jenkins spoke up, opening her briefcase and pulling out a stack of certified legal documents. "On June 14th, Julian Vance signed an affidavit denying paternity of Vivian’s unborn child and invoking Clause 12-B of the Vance Family Generational Trust Agreement."

Sarah turned to face the entire board of directors, raising her voice so everyone could hear.

"Clause 12-B states—and I quote—‘In the event that the male heir disavows paternity to deny spousal support, and certified genetic testing proves said paternity beyond reasonable doubt, the male heir’s entire allocation of voting shares (45%) shall instantly and irrevocably transfer to the child's legal guardian to protect the financial integrity of the bloodline.’"

The main board members instantly sat up straight. Mr. Harrison, the senior board director, pulled out his reading glasses. "Is this true, Eleanor?"

"It’s a forgery!" Eleanor shrieked, her regal posture completely crumbling. "She manipulated the DNA test! She’s playing games!"

"I performed the DNA extraction myself at St. Jude’s Hospital," Dr. Marcus Vance stepped forward, his head held high as he stared directly into his mother's eyes. "The results were verified by the State Forensic Laboratory this morning. Leo is 99.99% Julian’s son. He carries the Vance genetic marker."

Marcus turned to the crowd of investors. "My mother and brother lied to all of you. They fabricated a story of infidelity to ruin Vivian because Julian was scared she would audit his personal corporate transactions."

"Marcus, you traitorous rat!" Julian roared, lunging toward his brother.

"Sit down, Julian!" Mr. Harrison shouted, slamming his hand onto the table. "Marcus, what corporate transactions?"

I stepped forward, holding Leo securely with one arm while reaching into my pocket with the other. I pulled out a small remote control and pressed a button.

behind the podium lowered, and the high-definition projector flickered to life.

Suddenly, massive images illuminated the room.

Bank statements. Wire transfers to offshore accounts in Grand Cayman. Fake invoices for consulting services signed by shell companies registered under Julian’s name.

And right in the center of the screen: an email thread between Julian and Eleanor Vance from four months ago.

From: Julian Vance To: Eleanor Vance Subject: Vivian She’s getting too close to the Q3 audit ledgers. If she looks at the shell accounts, we’re done. I’m freezing her accounts tonight. We need to push the cheating narrative hard so no one believes her if she talks.

Reply from Eleanor Vance: Do it immediately. Starve her until she signs away custody and waives all financial rights. She has no family and no money. She will break.

The entire ballroom erupted into chaos.

Reporters began flashing cameras wildly. Board members stood up, shouting in outrage. Investors started frantically calling their brokers to sell their stock.

"You said she was starving!" Julian screamed at Eleanor, his face red and sweating profusely. "You said she was weak!"

Eleanor stood frozen, staring at the screen in utter horror as the foundation of her entire life crumbled to dust right in front of the city's elite.

I walked up to the podium, grabbed the microphone, and looked down at Julian and Eleanor.

"I was weak, Julian," I said, my voice vibrating through the speakers. "I was exhausted, hungry, and alone. But a mother fighting for her child is the most dangerous thing on earth. You thought you broke me. You just forced me to fight back."
