Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Vances

The aftermath of the board meeting was swift and brutal.
Within two hours, federal agents from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and local police arrived at the Vance Building. Armed with the digital forensic audit Sarah and I had submitted earlier that morning, they escorted Julian Vance out of the building in handcuffs, right in front of dozens of news cameras.
His charges included grand larceny, wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and filing false legal affidavits.
Eleanor Vance attempted to leave through the executive parking garage, but she was met by federal officers serving her with an arrest warrant as an accessory to corporate fraud and tax evasion. Her green silk gown and diamond necklace looked grotesquely out of place as she was placed into the back of a police cruiser.
By late afternoon, the news of the Vance family scandal was trending nationwide.

Sitting in Sarah’s office, watching the television broadcast, I felt a deep, overwhelming sense of relief. The heavy weight that had rested on my chest for months—the shame, the fear, the pain—finally melted away.
My phone, which had been silent for months, suddenly began buzzing nonstop.
Calls and messages were flooding in from former "friends," acquaintances, and high-society women who had ignored my pleas for help months ago.
“Vivian, oh my god! I always knew Julian was bad news!” “Vivian, sweetie, we are so sorry! Let’s get coffee soon!” “I always believed in you, Vivian! Can I send a gift for baby Leo?”
I stared at the glowing screen, feeling no anger—only a profound clarity.
Without hesitation, I selected "Select All" on the incoming messages from those former friends, hit Delete, and blocked their numbers permanently.
I didn't need fair-weather friends. I had survived the darkest storm of my life with nothing but my own strength, and I knew exactly who belonged in my life now.
Marcus walked into the office, carrying two hot cups of tea. He looked exhausted, but for the first time since I had met him in that delivery room, his eyes looked clear and at peace.
"It's over, Vivian," Marcus said quietly, handing me a cup. "The board held an emergency vote half an hour ago. They have officially recognized Leo’s 45% stake. Because Leo is a minor, you have been appointed as the interim Chairwoman of the Board until a permanent corporate restructuring is complete."
"And Julian?" I asked.
"Bail was set at five million dollars," Marcus replied. "His personal accounts are frozen. Mother’s accounts are frozen. Neither of them can pay it. They will remain in county jail until their trial."
Marcus looked down at Leo, who was sleeping peacefully in my arms, entirely unaware that he was now one of the wealthiest infants in the state.

"I know I can never fully make up for believing their lies in the beginning, Vivian," Marcus said softly, his voice full of genuine remorse. "But I promise you... as long as I live, I will protect you and my nephew."
"You did the right thing when it mattered most, Marcus," I said, offering him a warm, sincere smile. "And that’s what Leo will remember about his uncle."
