Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

Monday morning arrived with a cool, autumn rain pouring over the city skyline.

The glass-and-steel skyscraper of Vance Enterprises towered over the financial district. Inside the grand 40th-floor ballroom, crystal chandeliers glittered over round tables covered in white silk cloths. The city’s elite, board members, investors, and news reporters were all gathered, sipping champagne and waiting for Eleanor Vance’s victory speech.

At the front of the room, Julian stood in a pristine charcoal suit, laughing with a group of major investors. Eleanor stood beside him, dressed in an emerald green gown, looking every bit the ruthless matriarch she was.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Eleanor’s voice echoed through the microphone, cutting through the chatter of the crowd. "Thank you for joining us today. Today marks a new era for Vance Enterprises. My son, Julian, has weathered tremendous personal storms over the past few months—enduring betrayal from those he trusted most—yet he has stood tall."

The crowd applauded politely. Julian bowed his head with practiced humility.

"Today," Eleanor continued, "we officially consolidate his leadership by signing over the remaining primary shares of the Vance Trust—"

CLACK. CLACK. CLACK.

The heavy double oak doors at the back of the ballroom swung wide open.

The ambient noise in the room died instantly.

I walked into the room.

I wasn't wearing the faded, bleach-stained sweatpants from my hotel cleaning job. I was wearing a tailored, sharp black pantsuit. My hair was pulled back into a slick, professional bun. Beside me walked Sarah Jenkins, holding a thick leather briefcase, and Dr. Marcus Vance, dressed in his formal attire.

In my arms, wrapped in a navy blanket, was Leo.

Gasps rippled through the audience.

"Vivian?" someone whispered in the front row. "What is she doing here?" another muttered. "Security should throw her out!"

Julian’s face drained of color. Eleanor froze at the podium, her grip on the microphone tightening so hard her knuckles turned white.

"Security!" Eleanor screamed into the microphone, her voice dropping its refined polish and turning shrill. "Remove this woman immediately! She is trespassing!"

Two heavy-set security guards rushed toward me from the side doors.

"Touch her, and you’ll be named co-defendants in an open federal lawsuit," Sarah Jenkins’s voice cut through the room like a razor blade. She pulled out a stamped court order and held it high above her head. "I am Sarah Jenkins, senior partner at Jenkins & Associates. We are here to serve a certified injunction under the authority of the State Superior Court!"

The security guards stopped dead in their tracks, looking nervously at each other.

"What is the meaning of this madness?" Eleanor snarled, stepping down from the stage. "This is a private corporate function, Vivian! You have no standing here! You are an ex-wife who was discarded for infidelity!"

I didn't yell. I didn't raise my voice. I simply walked down the center aisle, the crowd parting like the Red Sea before me.

I stopped directly in front of Eleanor and Julian.

"I’m not here as your ex-wife, Eleanor," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the silent room. "I’m here as the legal representative of the majority shareholder of Vance Enterprises."
