Chapter 1 - THE CRACKED MIRROR

The photograph on the nightstand didn't just shatter the quiet in the guesthouse; it tore the air straight out of Laura’s lungs.
In the glossy 4x6 print, Mia’s face was thinner than Laura remembered, her eyes shadowed with exhaustion, but her pregnant stomach was unmistakable beneath a loose gray sweater. And beside her, smiling with a smooth, sickening familiarity, was Daniel. His arm was wrapped around Mia’s waist, his large hand pressed firmly over her bump.
The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating, and poisonous.
Laura stood frozen on the dusty wooden floorboards, her own hand still resting over her seven-month pregnant belly. She looked from the photograph to her husband.
"Daniel..." Laura’s voice was a ragged whisper, a thread of sound ready to snap. "What is this?"
Daniel didn't flinch. He didn't scream, and he didn't run. The nervous hesitation he had displayed moments ago melted away, replaced by a cold, calculating stillness that made Detective Elena Cruz’s hand drop instinctively toward her sidearm.
"Laura, calm down," Daniel said softly, his voice sickeningly gentle, as if he were speaking to an unstable child. "You’re upset. You aren't thinking clearly in your condition."
"Don't tell me to calm down!" Laura shrieked, the tears finally bursting free, burning hot against her ice-cold skin. "My sister vanished six months ago! My parents told me she stole money and ran to California! And all this time... she was living thirty yards from my back door?!"
She rushed forward, reaching for the photograph, but Elena caught her gently by the elbow, stepping between Laura and Daniel.
"Mr. Miller," Elena said, her voice dropping into a low, lethal register. "You are going to keep your hands where I can see them. Right now."
Daniel held his hands up at chest height, tilting his head with an air of mild annoyance rather than fear. "Detective, this is a massive misunderstanding. Mia came to me six months ago. She was broke, pregnant, and terrified of her parents. I offered her shelter. I didn't tell Laura because Laura’s pregnancy was high-risk, and the stress would have put her in the hospital."
"You took a picture with your hand on her stomach, Daniel!" Laura screamed, shaking against Elena's arm. "You held her! Where is she?! Where is my sister?!"
"She ran, Laura!" Daniel snapped, his calm facade cracking just enough to reveal a sharp, desperate edge. "She gave birth in this room three hours ago. I came out here to check on her, saw the baby, and panicked! She took her bag and ran into the woods behind the property before I could stop her!"
"He's lying," a tiny voice whispered from the doorway.
Everyone turned.

Eight-year-old Noah was standing beside a patrol officer, his bare foot tucked behind his socked ankle, his small face pale under the porch light. He pointed a trembling finger at Daniel.
"He didn't panic," Noah said, his voice quivering with a terrifying certainty. "Auntie Mia didn't run into the woods. She couldn't walk. I saw Uncle Daniel carrying her to his truck before he went back inside to sleep."
