Chapter 7 - THE RECLAMATION OF LAURA

Laura stood in the doorway.
She was still wearing her hospital gown under a trench coat, an IV bruise prominent on her wrist, her seven-month pregnant belly casting a sharp silhouette under the fluorescent lights.
Behind her stood Sergeant Mara Ellis, carrying Noah in her arms.
Laura walked down the hallway toward her father, her posture straight, her head held high, looking at him as if she were seeing a stranger for the very first time.
"Laura..." Richard began, reaching out a hand. "Sweetheart, you shouldn't be out of bed—"
SLAP!
The sound echoed down the quiet hallway like a gunshot.
Laura’s palm struck Richard across the face with enough force to turn his head. He stumbled back, his hand flying to his reddened cheek, his eyes wide with shock.
"Don't you ever call me sweetheart again," Laura said, her voice shaking with a rage so profound it made the floor beneath them seem to tremble. "I heard everything. The police played the audio from the guesthouse bug."
Richard’s eyes darted to Elena, realizing too late that the crime scene techs hadn't just collected physical evidence—they had retrieved the smart-home audio hub Daniel had installed in the guesthouse to monitor Mia’s movements.
"Laura, listen to me," Richard pleaded, his composure completely falling apart. "I did it for this family! Mia was unstable! She was going to ruin everything we built! Daniel and I... we were going to give that baby to you! You wanted a second child! We were making sure the family stayed whole!"
"You locked my sister in a shack!" Laura screamed, tears pouring down her face. "You let her bleed on a dirty floor while my husband tried to throw her away like garbage!"
She turned to her mother, who was weeping silently against the wall.
"And you knew," Laura whispered to Evelyn. "You knew Mia didn't steal that money. You let me believe my sister abandoned me!"
Evelyn couldn't look her in the eye. She lowered her head, sobbing into her handkerchief.
"You're both dead to me," Laura said, her voice dropping into a cold, unbreakable vow. "Both of you. And Daniel will rot in a cage for the rest of his natural life."
She turned away from them, walking over to Sergeant Ellis, and took Noah gently into her arms. The eight-year-old boy wrapped his small arms around his mother’s neck, burying his face in her shoulder.
"Mommy?" Noah whispered softly. "Is Auntie Mia going to come home?"

Laura kissed her son's forehead, looking through the glass window toward the surgical wing where her sister was fighting for her life.
"Yes, baby," Laura promised, her tears falling onto his hair. "We're going to bring her home. All of us."
