Chapter 10 - THE SUNRISE OF WESTBRIDGE

The first anniversary of the night Hope was born arrived under a clear, starlit sky.
At the Westbridge Police Department, Sergeant Mara Ellis was sitting at the front desk when the double glass doors slid open at 12:17 AM.
Mara stood up immediately, a instinctive jolt running through her chest.
Standing in the lobby was Elena Cruz, wearing a civilian coat, holding a large box of fresh donuts and a insulated carafe of coffee. Behind her walked Laura, Mia, and little Noah, who was carrying a sleeping one-year-old Hope in his arms.
Noah was wearing blue superhero pajamas. And on his feet were two bright yellow socks.
"We brought midnight snacks for the night shift," Elena smiled, setting the coffee down on the high wooden counter.
Mara let out a breathy laugh, coming around the desk to hug Laura and Mia. "You almost gave me a heart attack, Cruz. I have a trauma response to children entering this lobby after midnight."
Noah walked up to the counter, looking up at Mara with his bright, confident brown eyes.
"I brought her back," Noah said proudly, gesturing to his baby cousin, who stirred slightly in his arms, her tiny hand reaching out to grab his thumb. "But this time, nobody is hiding."
Mara dropped to one knee, looking at the young boy who had changed the course of four lives with one brave walk through the snow.
"You're a hero, Noah Miller," Mara said softly, tapping his nose gently. "The best this department has ever seen."
They sat together in the quiet station breakroom, drinking warm coffee, sharing stories, and listening to the soft, rhythmic breathing of the baby sleeping peacefully in her stroller.

Outside, the first faint light of dawn began to creep over the horizon, painting the sky above Westbridge in brilliant shades of gold, rose, and unending light.
The dark was gone. The cold was over. And in the warmth of the quiet room, the family that had been saved by a child’s courage stood together, whole, safe, and finally home.
