Chapter 6 - THE DYNASTY OF SILENCE

By 5:00 AM, the storm had passed, leaving Westbridge bathed in a cold, grey dawn.

Inside Westbridge Medical Center, Mia Bennett was in emergency surgery, receiving six units of blood while a team of surgeons worked to repair her internal hemorrhaging. Her newborn daughter was resting in an incubator on the floor above, stabilized and fed.

Elena stood in the hospital hallway, staring through the glass window at Richard Bennett—a tall, distinguished man in his late fifties with silver hair and a tailored wool coat—who had just arrived at the hospital accompanied by his wife, Evelyn.

Richard was pacing the floor of the private waiting room, speaking heatedly on his cell phone to a high-powered defense attorney.

"I don't care what the police are saying, Arthur!" Richard hissed into the phone. "My daughter stole fifty thousand dollars from my company six months ago and vanished! Whatever mess she’s gotten herself into with Daniel is her own doing!"

Elena pushed open the heavy glass door, her footsteps echoing sharply on the linoleum.

Richard hung up his phone immediately, straightening his coat, his face transforming into an expression of controlled, political concern.

"Detective Cruz," Richard said, stepping forward. "Thank God you're here. My wife and I came as soon as we heard the police broadcast. Is Mia going to survive?"

Elena didn't offer a handshake. She stood three feet from him, her arms crossed over her chest, her eyes cutting into him like glass.

"Your daughter is currently fighting for her life in Operating Room 3, Mr. Bennett," Elena said flatly. "And your granddaughter is in the NICU."

Evelyn Bennett gasped, covering her face with her hands, but Richard’s expression didn't change by a fraction.

"Granddaughter?" Richard repeated, his voice smooth and steady. "So... Mia was pregnant. That explains why she went into hiding. She was embarrassed."

"She wasn't embarrassed, Mr. Bennett," Elena said, pulling the bloody laminate card from her jacket pocket and holding it up between them. "She was terrified. Because she knew you and Daniel had spent six months planning to steal her child."

Richard froze. The political charm drained from his face, leaving behind a cold, arrogant mask.

"I have no idea what you're talking about," Richard said quietly.

"We ran the paternity test you tried to destroy," Elena lied smoothly, bluffing with absolute precision. "The Chicago lab kept a digital backup of the file, Mr. Bennett. We know you paid Daniel two hundred thousand dollars six months ago—transferred directly from your corporate account to a shell company in his name."

Evelyn turned to her husband, her face turning pale. "Richard? What is she talking about?"

"Shut up, Evelyn," Richard snapped, his eyes never leaving Elena’s face.

"You didn't want a scandal," Elena stated, stepping closer. "Your twenty-four-year-old daughter got pregnant, and if the truth came out about how you treated her, your upcoming state senate campaign would be dead in the water. So you hired your own son-in-law to keep her hidden in a guesthouse, wait for her to give birth, and hand the baby over to Laura to raise as her own twin."

Richard let out a dry, humorless laugh. "That is a absurd fairytale, Detective. You have no proof of any of this."

Before Elena could answer, the doors at the end of the hallway burst open.
