Chapter 4 - Shadows of Doubt
Despite the groundbreaking clinical findings, bureaucratic machinery in a hospital moves with rigid indifference. Just as Dr. Chen finished explaining the medical link, the door opened and two individuals in formal suits stepped into the room, accompanied by Dr. Aaron Blake and a hospital administrator.
“Claire Bennett? Daniel Bennett?” the woman in the gray suit asked, holding a manila folder. “I am Sarah Jenkins from Child Protective Services, and this is Mr. Vance from Hospital Risk Management.”
Daniel immediately stood up, placing himself protectively between the officials and his family. “What is this?”
“Because Mrs. Bennett has made four emergency room visits in forty-eight hours, made statements regarding child substitution, and suffered an unmonitored neurological seizure while holding the infant, a mandatory safety report was triggered,” Risk Management explained smoothly. “We are required to conduct an immediate safety assessment regarding infant care and potential temporary protective custody.”
“Are you out of your mind?” Dr. Chen stepped forward forcefully, placing herself beside Daniel. “We literally just identified the physiological origin of both mother and child's symptoms! Mrs. Bennett’s perceptions were directly linked to a real, documented pediatric cardiac arrhythmia!”
“Dr. Chen, with all due respect,” Dr. Blake interjected nervously, “the mother still suffered an unobserved focal seizure while holding an unstrapped infant in a moving vehicle. The husband himself admitted she drove here without a car seat.”
“Because she believed her son was dying!” Claire cried out from the bed, holding Eli tightly against her chest. “I was trying to save him!”
“Mrs. Bennett, please calm down,” Sarah Jenkins said calmly, opening her notepad. “We are not here to punish you. But until a full neurological treatment plan is established for you, and until the baby’s heart condition is stabilized, we must evaluate whether the home environment is safe. We may need to place Eli under temporary hospital custody or place him with a secondary guardian.”
“No!” Claire’s monitor began to beep frantically as her heart rate spiked to 140. On the EEG screen, sharp temporal spikes began firing in rapid succession.
“Stop!” Dr. Chen demanded, turning to the CPS worker and Dr. Blake. “Look at the EEG monitor! You are actively triggering a neurological event in my patient right now with this stress! I am ordering both of you out of this room immediately under medical authority!”
“Dr. Chen, you cannot dismiss Risk Management—”
“I can and I am!” Dr. Chen snapped. “This patient is currently undergoing active diagnostic evaluation for a linked cardio-neurological disorder. Any administrative interference that jeopardizes patient health will be documented in my medical report to the board. Out!”
Reluctantly, Sarah Jenkins and the Risk Management officer backed out of the room, though Jenkins added, “We will hold a formal multidisciplinary safety review at 4:00 PM today, Dr. Chen. If there is no concrete medical diagnosis explaining the link by then, CPS will issue a temporary protective hold.”
The door closed. Claire was shaking violently, clutching Eli, who had begun to cry again.
“They’re going to take him,” Claire sobbed. “Daniel, don't let them take him!”

“They won't,” Daniel vowed, holding them both tight. “I won't let them.”
Dr. Chen turned to Dr. Vance and Dr. Varma with fierce determination. “We have until 4:00 PM. Let's find out what is causing this channelopathy before they destroy this family.”
