Chapter 8 - Rebuilding Trust

Three days later, the hospital room felt less like an emergency clinic and more like a peaceful sanctuary.

Claire had been started on her anti-seizure medication, and her follow-up 24-hour EEG showed complete normalization of her temporal brain waves. Eli was receiving a micro-dose of infant beta-blocker therapy, and his pediatric cardiac monitor had not registered a single micro-arrhythmia in over forty-eight hours.

Daniel sat on the edge of Claire’s bed, holding a warm cup of tea for her.

“I was so quick to doubt you,” Daniel said softly, looking down at his hands. “When you told me his eyes disappeared... when you told me his chest was hollow... I thought I was watching the woman I loved break apart. I should have stood by you more firmly.”

Claire reached out and gently touched Daniel’s cheek. “Daniel, you were terrified. I looked terrified. My brain was skipping time and leaving me stranded in horror. You didn't leave me. You showed up at the hospital, even when I told you to stay away. You held my hand through every test.”

“We’re a team,” Daniel said, tears glistening in his eyes. “From now on, we listen to each other. Always.”

Dr. Maya Chen walked into the room carrying a stack of discharge papers, a broad smile on her face.

“Well, Bennett family,” Maya announced cheerfully, “your final test results are spotless. Eli’s heart rhythm is smooth as butter, and Claire’s EEG is completely clear. You are officially cleared to go home.”

Claire held Eli up, looking at his beautiful, pink face. His dark eyes locked onto hers, bright and focused. He made a soft, happy cooing sound and reached his tiny hand toward her chin.

“No missing pieces,” Claire whispered, smiling through sweet tears. “Every part of you is right here.”
