Chapter 9 - The First Quiet Night

The Bennett home was quiet when they arrived that evening. The pale afternoon sun filtered through the living room curtains, illuminating the cozy nursery that had spent weeks feeling like a place of dread.

Daniel helped Claire into the rocking chair in the corner of the nursery, placing a soft pillow behind her back. He set up the new pediatric heart monitor beside the crib—a state-of-the-art silent monitor that streamed data directly to Dr. Vance’s clinic, though the doctors had reassured them it was merely a precaution.

At 1:43 AM—the exact time Claire had panicked the night of her last ER visit—Claire woke up in the rocking chair.

Eli was sleeping peacefully in his crib beside her.

Claire felt no racing pulse in her neck. She heard no phantom knocking inside her head. She closed her eyes for a moment, taking a deep, restorative breath, and opened them again.

Time did not jump. The world remained stable and clear.

She leaned over the crib rail and placed her palm gently on Eli’s chest.

Beneath her fingers, she felt the steady, gentle, unbroken rhythm of her son’s heart. Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Thump-thump.

Eli opened his eyes, saw his mother’s face, and gave a tiny, contented sigh before closing his eyes and drifting back to sleep.

Daniel walked softly into the nursery, carrying a warm blanket. He wrapped it around Claire’s shoulders and sat on the floor beside her chair, resting his head against her knee.

“How is he?” Daniel whispered.

“He’s perfect,” Claire smiled, stroking Daniel’s hair. “And his heart is right where it belongs.”

For the first time in six long, grueling weeks, the entire house fell into a deep, peaceful, uninterrupted sleep.
