Chapter 10 - A New Sunrise

One year after that dreadful 2:27 a.m. phone call, the warm autumn afternoon sun washed over the lake house in golden light.
The front yard was decorated with colorful paper lanterns and fresh flowers. Laughter echoed across the manicured lawn where friends, neighbors, and colleagues from the Attorney General’s office had gathered for a celebration—Mrs. Hale’s 70th birthday.
Mrs. Hale walked comfortably among the guests, no longer wearing a cast or moving with hesitation. She wore a bright crimson dress, her smile radiant and full of life. She was surrounding herself with real community—people who valued her for her kindness and wisdom.
Director Vance stood near the grill with Evelyn, holding a glass of sparkling cider.
“You know, Evelyn,” Vance remarked, watching Mrs. Hale laugh with a neighbor. “The Attorney General officially approved your promotion to Chief of the Public Integrity and Civil Rights Division starting next month.”
Evelyn smiled, taking a sip of her drink. “I’m ready.”
“You built something incredible out of a tragic night,” Vance said respectfully. “Westbridge is safer, the state integrity protocols are stronger, and most importantly… your mom is safe.”
“That’s all that ever mattered,” Evelyn said quietly.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant hues of violet, gold, and orange, Evelyn walked over to the edge of the porch where her mother was standing, looking out over the quiet water.
Mrs. Hale reached over and held Evelyn’s hand, squeezing it tight.
“It’s a beautiful evening, isn't it?” Mrs. Hale murmured softly.

Evelyn wrapped her arm around her mother’s shoulders, feeling the strength and warmth that had returned to her family at last.
“It really is, Mom,” Evelyn replied, smiling into the warm sunset. “It really is.”
