Chapter 5 - Betrayal at the Dinner Table

The release of the undeniable evidence turned the tide of public opinion overnight. The media turned fiercely against Dana and Michael, and protests formed outside the Westbridge precinct demanding Captain Ross’s permanent removal.

However, Evelyn knew that to secure maximum convictions without possibility of appeal, she needed to uncover the financial motive behind the attack. She executed a search warrant on Michael and Dana’s financial records.

What she discovered was far worse than simple greed.

Sitting in her office, Evelyn reviewed bank statements revealing that Michael had secretly accumulated over $400,000 in illegal gambling debts to an offshore syndicate. The debt collectors had given him a deadline: pay in full by the end of the month, or face violent retaliation.

Further investigation revealed that six months earlier, Michael had forged his mother’s signature to take out a second mortgage on Mrs. Hale’s house, transferring the funds into Dana’s personal account. When Mrs. Hale received a foreclosure notice from the bank two days before the assault, she realized what Michael had done and threatened to go to the police.

That was why Dana hit her. It was not a sudden argument—it was a calculated attempt to silence Mrs. Hale, have her declared mentally incompetent, and gain legal power of attorney to sell the property before the forgery was discovered.

Evelyn personally drove to the state correctional facility where Michael was being held after his bail was revoked due to new financial fraud charges.

She sat across from him behind the reinforced glass. Michael looked haggard, his designer clothes replaced by an orange jumpsuit.

“Evelyn… please,” Michael begged, pressing his hands against the glass. “You have to drop the fraud charges! Dana’s family promised to pay off my debts if I stick to the story!”

“Dana’s family turned on you an hour ago, Michael,” Evelyn said coldly. “Dana filed for divorce from jail this morning. Her lawyers are blaming the entire attack on you, claiming you forced her to hit Mom.”

Michael froze, his face draining of all color. “What? No! Dana was the one who hit her! She grabbed the bat from the garage! I just… I just didn't stop her!”

“You sat there and watched your wife break Mom’s bones so you could pay off your gambling debts,” Evelyn said, her voice filled with quiet condemnation. “And now Dana is making you take the entire fall.”

“Help me, Evelyn! You’re my sister!” Michael sobbed, pounding on the glass.

“I am a prosecutor,” Evelyn corrected him softly. “And my client is justice. You made your choice that night at 2:27 a.m.”
