Chapter 6 - Arrests and Indictments
The legal hammer fell swift and unrelenting.
Based on the evidence uncovered by Evelyn’s team, the State Grand Jury returned a 14-count indictment against Dana, Michael, Captain Ross, and two accomplice officers.
The charges were staggering:
Dana Hale: First-Degree Felony Assault, Attempted Extortion, Tampering with Evidence, and Elder Abuse with Intent to Cause Severe Bodily Harm.
Michael Hale: Conspiracy to Commit Felony Assault, Forgery, Grand Larceny, Financial Elder Abuse, and Perjury.
Captain Ross: Deprivation of Civil Rights Under Color of Law, Felony Obstruction of Justice, Evidence Tampering, and Conspiracy.
Captain Ross was arrested at his home by federal marshals in front of his neighbors. His badge was stripped, his retirement pension frozen, and his illicit financial ties to local property developers exposed.
With the corrupt officers removed, Mrs. Hale was finally able to return home under twenty-four-hour private protection provided by Evelyn’s agency.
Evelyn spent the evening at her mother’s house, helping her arrange flowers in the living room. Mrs. Hale’s cast was painted bright lavender, and although she moved slowly, the color had returned to her cheeks.
“Evelyn,” Mrs. Hale said, looking around the bright, sunlit room. “I spent months feeling so afraid in my own house. Every time Michael came over, he made me feel like I was crazy… like I was forgetting things on purpose.”
Evelyn hugged her mother tightly. “That’s called gaslighting, Mom. They wanted to strip away your confidence so you wouldn’t fight back. But you survived.”

“I’m sad for him,” Mrs. Hale whispered softly, tears brimming in her eyes. “He was my little boy.”
“He had every opportunity to do the right thing, Mom,” Evelyn said gently. “Some people choose darkness no matter how much light you give them. Now, we let the law finish the work.”
