Chapter 7 - The Trial Begins

Two months later, the high-profile trial of State v. Dana Hale and Michael Hale commenced at the State Superior Courthouse. The courtroom was packed to capacity with journalists, legal observers, and citizens following the dramatic case.

Dana sat at the defense table wearing a conservative high-collared navy dress, her hair pulled back neatly, trying to present herself as a meek, soft-spoken victim of family conflict. Her lead defense attorney, a ruthless veteran lawyer named Richard Sterling, sat beside her.

Michael sat at a separate defense table with his court-appointed public defender, looking broken and defeated.

Evelyn represented the prosecution as lead state counsel.

In her opening statement, Evelyn walked calmly in front of the jury box. She held no paper notes, looking directly into the eyes of each juror.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, this case is not merely about a physical attack,” Evelyn began, her clear voice carrying through the silent courtroom. “It is about the systematic dismantling of a mother’s safety by the people she trusted most. It is about greed so consuming that it turned a son into an accomplice and a daughter-in-law into a monster. The evidence will show that on the night of October 14th, a calculated plan was executed to strip an elderly woman of her home, her sanity, and very nearly her life.”

When defense attorney Sterling presented his case, he attempted to paint Mrs. Hale as an aggressive, confused woman who threw a heavy glass vase at Dana first, forcing Dana to defend herself with the baseball bat.

Sterling called Dana to the witness stand.

Dana took the stand, dabbing her eyes with a tissue. “I was terrified,” Dana wept softly into the microphone. “Mrs. Hale lost her temper over a simple conversation. She threw a vase at my head! I grabbed the bat from the closet just to keep her away from me! I never meant to hurt her!”

Sterling smiled smoothly. “Your witness, Counsel.”

Evelyn stood up from the prosecution table, holding a heavy manila folder. The trial was about to reach its climax.
