Chapter 3 - The Boardroom and the Cradle

By 6:00 a.m., the mansion had transformed. The heavy, stagnant air of the locked room had been integrated into the rest of the house. The silver audio recorder was now placed on the nursery shelf, playing a soft, low loop of Claire reading children’s poetry. The effect on the babies was immediate and profound; Noah and Lily lay wide awake, their large, dark eyes tracking the sound of the speaker, their tiny fists relaxing against the yellow blankets Grace had retrieved.

Ethan hadn't slept, but for the first time in three months, his mind felt sharp, cleared of the foggy panic that had plagued his every decision.

However, the peace of the morning was shattered at 8:30 a.m. when Daniel Pierce, Ethan’s long-time business partner and vice-president of Whitmore Industries, arrived at the house without an appointment. He carried a heavy leather briefcase and an expression of grim urgency.

"Ethan, thank God you’re awake," Daniel said, stepping into the massive foyer and dropping his briefcase onto the marble table. "We have a massive crisis. The Apex Group has caught wind of that bad logistics deal you signed last week when you were sleep-deprived. They’re launching a hostile takeover bid at the board meeting this Thursday. They're going to use your... your current personal situation to argue that you are mentally unfit to remain as CEO."

Ethan felt a cold surge of adrenaline. Whitmore Industries was his life's work—the company he and Claire had dreamed of passing down to their children. "They think they can push me out because I'm grieving?"

"They think they can push you out because you’re failing to lead," Daniel corrected him sharply, his eyes darting toward the stairs as the faint sound of Claire’s recorded voice drifted down. Daniel frowned. "What is that sound? Is that... Claire?"

"It’s what my children need to hear," Ethan said, his voice firming with a new, defensive steel. "And I am not leaving this house today, Daniel. The board meeting can happen via video conference from my study."

"Ethan, you don't understand," Daniel stepped closer, his voice dropping. "The board needs to see the absolute alpha version of you. If you look tired, if you look distracted by childcare, they will vote with Apex. Who is running things up there? Did you hire another agency?"

"No," Ethan said as Grace walked down the grand staircase, carrying a basket of laundry. She was still wearing her simple navy sweater, her hair pulled back into a messy bun.

Daniel stared at her, recognizing her instantly from the charity gala. "The cleaner? Ethan, are you out of your mind? You're risking a multi-billion-dollar empire because you're trusting an untrained event worker with your heirs?"

Grace stopped at the bottom of the stairs, her expression calm but unyielding. "Mr. Pierce, the 'untrained worker' is the only reason those heirs aren't screaming themselves into a seizure right now. Mr. Whitmore doesn't need to look like an alpha for his board. He needs to look like a father who has control of his home. If he has control here, he can handle Apex."

Ethan looked between Daniel’s panicked expression and Grace’s steady presence. For the past ninety days, he had relied on corporate logic to solve a human tragedy, and it had brought him to the brink of ruin.

"Grace is right," Ethan said, turning to his partner. "Set up the digital link for Thursday morning, Daniel. I will defend my company from my study. But I will do it with my children in the next room."
