Chapter 9 - The Legal Shield

The final battleground was not the boardroom, but a private chamber in the Cook County Family Court. Evelyn Sterling sat across from Ethan, surrounded by four of the highest-paid international custody lawyers money could secure. Judge Margaret Ross, a stern, no-nonsense jurist, presided over the emergency hearing.
"Your Honor," Evelyn’s lead attorney argued, presenting a thick binder. "We have evidence that the current environment in the Whitmore mansion is highly unstable. The father has recently purged his entire executive board amid an espionage scandal. Furthermore, the children are being cared for by an individual with zero pediatric credentials, who has a history of severe financial instability."
Judge Ross looked over the glasses balanced on the bridge of her nose, then turned her gaze toward Grace, who sat quietly beside Ethan at the petitioner’s table. Grace wore a simple, elegant dark gray suit, her hands folded neatly over her lap.
"Ms. Holloway," Judge Ross said. "The opposition claims you are unqualified to manage the care of these four high-risk infants. What do you have to say to that?"
Grace stood up, her movement deliberate and dignified. She didn't look at the lawyers or at Evelyn’s glinting diamonds. She looked directly at the judge.
"Your Honor, I don't have a certificate from a Swiss nanny school," Grace said, her voice resonant and clear. "But I have ninety-one days of medical charts tracking the sleep patterns, heart rates, and weight gain of these children. I have the written testimony of their primary pediatrician, Dr. Evans, who states that their lung development has improved by thirty percent since we introduced auditory familiarity and emotional regulation methods."
She pulled out a small leather journal—not Claire’s, but her own logbook. "Evelyn Sterling wants to take these children to a castle in Surrey because she cares about her family’s social standing in the London papers. But she doesn't know that Jack has a mild sensitivity to dairy, or that Sophie only sleeps when she’s positioned on her left side because of her early acid reflux. A pedigree doesn't raise babies, Your Honor. Love does. And their father loves them enough to stand in the room with their grief instead of hiding from it."
Judge Ross looked at the documentation Grace presented, then looked at Ethan, whose eyes were fixed on Grace with an expression that was unmistakable to anyone watching: profound respect, gratitude, and the undeniable beginnings of a deep, enduring love.

The judge slammed her gavel down. "The petition for emergency custody is denied. The court finds no evidence of neglect or instability. In fact, this court commends Mr. Whitmore for his choice of household management. This case is dismissed with prejudice. Good day, counselors."
Evelyn Sterling stood up, her face twisted in aristocratic defeat, and swept out of the courtroom without looking back.
