Chapter 10 - The View from the Duomo

The late afternoon sun washed over the orange terracotta rooftops of Florence, casting a golden light across the Piazza del Duomo.

I stood on the balcony of a small, elegant hotel overlooking the cathedral, holding a glass of Chianti. Below, the streets were alive with the gentle hum of scooters, street musicians, and laughter echoing off centuries-old stone walls.

Brooke walked out onto the terrace, holding two plates of fresh bruschetta and olives.

"This view is unbelievable," she said, leaning against the stone balustrade. "You know... six months ago, I thought my life was completely over when I walked away from that wedding."

"And now?" I asked, looking at her.

"Now I realized that walking away from a lie is the only way to find something real," Brooke smiled, raising her glass. "To fresh starts."

"To fresh starts," I echoed, clinking my glass against hers.

I looked out over the skyline of Florence.

Six months ago, five people had sat around a breakfast table and decided I wasn't worth including, while assuming I would pay the bill for their happiness. They had thought my silence was weakness, my generosity was an open bank account, and my compliance was guaranteed.

They had been wrong.

I hadn't just saved $9,600 that morning. I had saved my own life. I had reclaimed my dignity, rebuilt my boundaries, and taught the people I loved that respect is not optional.

I took a sip of wine, felt the warm Italian breeze against my face, and smiled.

I was standing in Florence, paying my own way, living my own life, and the view from the top was breathtakingly clear.
