Chapter 19 - Rebuilding Dreams

Autumn arrived in Tuscany with breathtaking beauty. The green vineyards turned into brilliant shades of crimson and gold, and the cool evening breeze brought the rich scent of harvested grapes and burning wood fire.
With the legal battles permanently resolved and our past completely severed, Brooke and I decided to invest our energy and resources into something meaningful. We bought a historic 17th-century estate in the heart of the Chianti countryside, turning it into a luxury boutique retreat and artistic sanctuary for creators, writers, and travelers seeking fresh starts.
For three months, we poured our hearts into the renovation. We worked alongside local Italian artisans, restoring original stone arches, planting organic olive groves, and designing quiet spaces meant for healing and reflection.
One evening, after the workmen had left, Brooke and I sat on the broad stone patio overlooking our estate. The valley below was bathed in the warm, golden glow of the Tuscan sunset.
"Look at this place," Brooke said, swirling a glass of estate-grown red wine. "Six months ago, I was sitting in a dressing room in Chicago, crying in a wedding dress, feeling like my life was over. Now, I own a piece of paradise."
"You built this, Brooke," I said. "Your courage brought you here."
"Our courage," she corrected gently, looking into my eyes. "We saved each other."
She pulled out a sleek folder from her bag and laid it on the table. It was the official registration for our joint venture: Villa Nuova Inizio—Villa Fresh Start.
"We have twelve confirmed bookings for our opening month," she smiled proudly. "Artists, entrepreneurs, people who just need a quiet place to rebuild their lives."
"No toxic energy allowed," I chuckled.
"Strict policy," she agreed, laughing softly.
I looked at her— radiant, confident, completely unburdened by the ghosts of her past. The quiet, reserved woman who had stepped out onto that hotel balcony in Florence six months ago had transformed into a partner of extraordinary strength and vision.
And I had changed, too. I was no longer the reliable pushover who allowed toxic people to use my success as their safety net. I had set my boundaries in stone, protected the people who truly mattered, and reclaimed my life completely.

"I have one more contract to take care of," I said, reaching into my pocket.
Brooke blinked in surprise as I pulled out a small, elegant wooden box and set it on the table between us.
