Chapter 17 - Storm Over Venice

Venice was supposed to be our sanctuary—a dream of winding canals, gothic architecture, and peaceful gondola rides under moonlight. We rented an exquisite private apartment overlooking the Grand Canal, accessible only by water taxi.

For three days, the world was perfect. We wandered through quiet alleyways, tasted seafood at local osterias, and let the slow, rhythmic cadence of the city heal the final scars of our past lives.

However, desperation in its final death throes is unpredictable.

On our fourth evening, while returning from dinner near the Rialto Bridge, a sudden torrential summer downpour flooded the narrow walkways. Rain poured in sheets, turning the romantic stone alleys into dark, slippery passages.

As we navigated a quiet alley leading back to our private water dock, a shadowy figure stepped out from an archway, blocking our path.

It was Mark.

Unlike David’s timid hesitation or Julian’s frantic pleading, Mark looked completely unhinged. Rain soaked his jacket, his hair plastered to his forehead, his eyes wide with a dangerous mix of panic and rage.

"You ruined everything!" Mark screamed over the sound of the pouring rain.

I immediately pushed Brooke behind me, stepping into a defensive stance. "Mark. You need to back away."

"Julian is going to prison!" Mark yelled, taking a erratic step forward. "My assets were frozen this morning! The FBI came to my house! All because you couldn't just write a check! You had millions, and you destroyed us over a few thousand dollars!"

"You destroyed yourselves!" Brooke shouted from behind me, her voice echoing off the wet stone walls. "You were stealing from him for years!"

"Shut up!" Mark snarled, pulling a heavy brass heavy-duty flashlight from his pocket, holding it like an improvised weapon. "You're going to fix this. You're going to call your lawyers, drop the charges, and give me the cash to get out of the country, or neither of you is walking out of this alley!"

The atmosphere turned instantly volatile. This was no longer a legal dispute or a quiet conversation; it was the final violent lash of a defeated predator.

"Mark," I said, my voice dangerously calm, stepping forward slowly. "Look at yourself. You're standing in a alley in Venice, threatening me with a weapon because your illegal gravy train finally stopped. You think hitting me solves your problems?"

"I have nothing left to lose!" he screamed, raising the heavy object.

He lunged forward.

My instincts, sharpened by years of martial arts training in my youth, took over instantly. As Mark swung the metal flashlight toward my head, I sidestepped the blow, slipping beneath his guard. I grabbed his outstretched wrist, twisted it sharply down, and slammed my forearm into his chest.

Mark gasped as the air exploded from his lungs. He slipped on the wet cobblestones, crashing hard onto his back. The heavy flashlight clattered across the stones and splashed into the canal water below.

Before he could regain his footing, I pinned his arm behind his back, pressing my knee firmly into his shoulder blade, locking him down completely.

"It's over, Mark," I said in his ear, my breath steady despite the adrenaline coursing through my veins. "You lost."

Brooke had already pulled out her phone, speaking rapidly to the local Italian police emergency dispatcher in fluent, calm Italian.

Within five minutes, the siren lights of a Venetian police boat illuminated the narrow canal. Two officers rushed into the alley, taking custody of the weeping, completely defeated Mark.

As they led him away in handcuffs, Mark looked back at me, his eyes hollow. "We used to be your friends," he whispered.

"No," I replied, watching the rain wash the dirt off the cobblestones. "You were just using me. And the bill has finally come due."
