Chapter 15 - High Stakes in Rome

Rome in late summer was a battlefield of heat, history, and light. We booked a private suite at a historic hotel overlooking the Spanish Steps, transforming our sitting room into a command center.

Two days after our arrival, the inevitable occurred.

Julian, realizing that sending emissaries like David and Marcus had failed, decided to fly to Rome himself, taking Clara with him. They had tracked down our hotel through a corrupted contact at our previous tour agency—a minor breach I promptly rectified and documented for legal action.

They didn't send a warning text. They ambushed us in the hotel’s private courtyard lounge.

Brooke and I were sitting at a secluded table beneath an arbor of vines, enjoying afternoon coffee, when Julian and Clara walked in.

Julian looked terrible. His signature tailored suits were gone, replaced by a rumpled blazer and tired eyes. Clara, who usually carried herself with upper-class disdain, looked frantic, her posture rigid with desperation.

"Found you," Julian said, his voice trying to project a power he no longer possessed.

I didn't stand up. I didn't offer them a seat. I simply set my coffee cup down with a soft clink.

"Julian. Clara," I said neutrally. "You've traveled a long way to waste more of your time."

Clara stepped forward, slamming her designer handbag onto our table. "Waste our time?! You ruined our lives! Do you have any idea what you did to us by walking out six months ago?"

"I saved myself $9,600," I replied calmly. "And preserved my self-respect."

"You left us stranded!" Clara shouted, drawing quiet glares from nearby guests. "The venue canceled our date! The caterers sued us! My parents cut us off because of the public embarrassment! All because you threw a temper tantrum over a bill you could easily afford!"

"Sit down, Clara," Brooke said, her tone cold and commanding. "You're making a spectacle of yourself."

Clara turned on Brooke, her eyes flashing with venom. "You don't get to speak to me, you runaway bride! You’re just using him to pay for your Italian vacation because your own life exploded!"

"Careful, Clara," I warned, my voice lowering to a razor-thin threat. "You are speaking to someone who actually has integrity. Something you and Julian clearly traded away years ago."

Julian put a hand on Clara's shoulder, pulling her back slightly, and took a deep breath. He tried to revert to his old tactic: the heartfelt, brothers-in-arms guilt trip.

"Look, man," Julian said, his voice softening, attempting an emotional pitch. "We made a mistake. We shouldn't have talked about you like that at the restaurant. It was bad taste. But we were under intense pressure! I was facing business struggles, and I thought... I thought we were brothers. Brothers help each other out when things get tough. You have more than enough. Why did you have to destroy me over money?"

I looked at Julian—the man I had known for years, the man I had given interest-free loans to, the man whose rent I had quietly covered when his first business failed.

"It wasn't about the money, Julian," I said steadily. "It was about the fact that you saw my generosity as a weakness to be exploited. You didn't just ask for help; you forged my involvement. You tried to tie me to a $60,000 liability to cover up your own embezzlement."

Julian froze. The color drained from his face as if he had been struck by lightning. "What... what are you talking about?"

"I know about your tech firm, Julian," I said, leaning forward, resting my elbows on the table. "I know about the $80,000 you lost in margin trading. I know about the indemnity clause Clara signed trying to make me the primary guarantor for your wedding contracts. I have every bank statement, every email, and every contract draft documented."

Clara gasped, looking at Julian in sudden horror. "You said he didn't know about that!" she hissed.

"Shut up, Clara!" Julian snapped, his composure completely disintegrating.

"You came to Rome thinking you could corner me, play on my past affection for you, or guilt me into cutting a check to save you from bankruptcy," I said, standing up. I towered over Julian, the sheer weight of six months of personal growth and self-mastery backing every word. "Instead, you just walked straight into a trap."

Julian took a step back, trembling. "What did you do?"

"I filed a formal petition with the Illinois State Prosecutor's Office yesterday morning," I said quietly. "For fraud, attempted grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement. The police back home are already seizing your business records."

May you like

Julian fell back into an empty armchair, his hands clutching his head in sheer terror.

"You're going to prison, Julian," I added softly. "And no amount of my money is ever going to save you again."
