Chapter 1 - The Echo in the Snow

The warmth of that Christmas night lingered in the wooden beams of the Whitfield home, but winter outside was relentless. A week after New Year’s Day, a heavy blizzard descended upon the valley, burying the roads in pristine, deceptive white.
Daniel sat at his drafting table in the study, the soft glow of a green banker's lamp illuminating blueprints of a new sustainable housing project. The name Whitfield no longer stood for predatory real estate empires; Daniel had spent the last two years rebranding his life's work toward community restoration.
The silence of the house was broken by the sharp, rhythmic vibration of his phone against the oak desk. An unknown, encrypted number.
He picked it up, a sudden weight settling in his chest. "Daniel Whitfield."
"You built a very pretty nest, little brother," a voice rasped through the static.
Daniel’s grip on the phone tightened until his knuckles turned stark white. The voice belonged to Julian Whitfield—his eldest brother, the ruthless golden boy of the family who had fled the country two years ago when their father’s corrupt empire crumbled. Everyone assumed Julian was hiding in a non-extradition territory in South America, broke and defeated.
"Julian," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous register. "There is nothing left for you here. The assets are liquidated. The courts finalized the bankruptcy."
"The public assets, yes," Julian chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. "But father was a paranoid man, Daniel. He didn't keep all his eggs in one basket. There is a secondary ledger—one that details the offshore trusts holding the remaining family fortune. And more importantly, it contains the private signatures of every corrupt city official who helped us build those 'golden fortresses' you so proudly tore down."
"I don't care about the money, Julian. Keep it and rot."
May you like
"Oh, I don't care about the money either, Daniel. I want my life back. And to get it, I need that ledger. Father hid it in the one place you've spent the last year rebuilding: the old foundation of the Whitfield Manor. If you don't find it for me, I’ll make sure the authorities receive a very convincing package implicating your beloved Emily in the early financial cover-ups of the firm. Let’s see how warm your Christmas looks from a prison cell."
The line went dead. Daniel stood up slowly, looking out the window into the swirling snow. The shadows of his past were clawing their way out of the grave.
