Chapter 8 - The Trap Springs

Daniel handed over the USB drive, and Julian snatched it greedily, tossing the manila folder to Daniel.

Julian quickly plugged the drive into a rugged laptop his thug held open. His eyes gleamed as the screen began to run a complex sequence of code, displaying what looked like the decryption of the Whitfield offshore accounts.

"Yes!" Julian laughed, a maniacal, triumphant sound. "It's all here. The power, the legacy... it’s mine again!"

"We're leaving, Julian," Daniel said, taking Emily's hand.

"I don't think so," Julian said, his face darkening as he slammed the laptop shut. He nodded to his men, who drew their weapons. "You really think I’d let you walk away to tell the authorities? Once I clear these accounts, you two are going to have a tragic accident on this frozen lake."

But before the thugs could take a step, the sound of sirens wailed in the distance. Searchlights suddenly pierced through the fog from the water as two Coast Guard tactical boats sped toward the dock.

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons!" a megaphone boomed.

From the landward side of the docks, several police cruisers blocked the exit, their red and blue lights flashing against the snow.

Julian looked at the laptop, then at Daniel, his face twisting in realization. "You... you tracked me!"

"The key wasn't a decryption tool, Julian," Daniel said calmly. "It was an arrest warrant in a digital sleeve."
