Chapter 9 - The Final Collapse

Desperate, Julian grabbed the laptop and ran toward the edge of the pier, intending to jump onto a waiting speed boat hidden beneath the dock.

"Julian, stop! The ice is thin!" Daniel shouted, lunging forward to stop his brother.

But Julian didn't listen. He leaped over the wooden railing, landing heavily on the frozen surface of the lake. A loud, sharp CRACK echoed through the quiet morning.

The ice instantly gave way under his weight. Julian plunged into the dark, freezing water, his heavy winter gear immediately pulling him under. He thrashed wildly, his screams cut short by the icy current.

"Daniel!" Emily cried out.

Without a second thought, Daniel threw off his heavy coat and slid down the wooden pilings toward the freezing water.

"Daniel, no! It's too dangerous!" Emily screamed, tears streaming down her face.

Daniel ignored the biting cold as he reached into the dark water, grabbing Julian by his collar just as his brother was about to slip beneath the ice sheet. With a desperate, agonizing heave of strength, Daniel pulled Julian up onto a solid section of the ice pier, rolling him onto his back.

The tactical officers arrived seconds later, pulling both brothers up to safety. Julian lay shivering, defeated, and thoroughly broken, as the officers clicked the handcuffs onto his wrists.

Daniel lay on the wooden deck of the pier, gasping for air, his body shaking violently from the hypothermia. Emily threw herself over him, wrapping her own coat around him, crying tears of relief.

"I've got you," she whispered, kissing his cold forehead. "We're safe. It's over."
