Chapter 1 - The Play Button

The silence in my mother’s living room was heavier than the snow piling up outside the front window. Jessica’s face transformed instantly from flushed, self-righteous rage to a ghastly, translucent white. Her hand remained suspended over the coffee table, trembling slightly, as her gaze locked onto the glowing pink screen of my eight-year-old daughter's tablet.

"Melody," I whispered, my voice tight as I kept one hand protectively on Tyler’s shaking shoulder. "What do you have, sweetheart?"

Melody didn't look at me. She kept her gray eyes fixed entirely on Jessica, showing a fierce, protective bravery that she must have gathered from surviving the wreckage of my divorce. "Two weeks ago, when we came over to help Grandma decorate the tree, I was testing out the time-lapse video setting for my science class. I left my tablet propped up on the bookshelf in the master bedroom."

My mother, Patricia, took a sharp breath, her hands flying to her mouth. My father slowly folded his newspaper, the crinkling sound like gunfire in the quiet room. He stood up from his recliner, his tall frame casting a long shadow over the ruined Christmas morning.

"Play it, Melody," my father said. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried the terrifying weight of a man who had worked thirty years in the county court system.

"Don't you dare!" Jessica shrieked, her voice cracking as she took a desperate step toward my daughter.

I immediately moved my body, blocking her path entirely. "Step back, Jessica. Don't make another mistake today."

Melody pressed the screen. The small speakers of the tablet filled the room with the fast-forwarded hum of the video, then slowed down to real-time playback. On the screen, the background of my parents' bedroom was unmistakable. The video showed the door opening, and Jessica walking in. She wasn't looking for a bathroom. She was looking around deliberately.

The video clearly showed her opening my mother’s velvet vanity box, lifting out the heavy, antique platinum ring set with its deep green emerald, and dropping it directly into the zippered inner pocket of her designer purse.

"Oh, Jessica," Garrett breathed. He looked at his wife as if she were a complete stranger, his arms dropping to his sides. "You told me you found that purse on sale. You told me Mom lost the ring at the grocery store."

"Garrett, it's not what it looks like!" Jessica cried, turning to him, her hands clawing at his coat sleeves. "Your mother was going to give it to her anyway! She gives everything to Emily! We're the ones suffering, we're the ones paying thousands for clinics, and she just gets handed a life! I took what should have been ours!"

"It was never yours to take," my mother said, her voice shaking with a devastating mixture of heartbreak and fury. "That was my mother's ring. And it was meant for the child who just caught you stealing it."
