Chapter 4 - The Escalation
The day after Christmas brought a barrage of text messages and phone calls that made it clear Jessica was not going to disappear quietly. Rather than showing remorse, she went on the offensive.
By noon, she had posted a long, distorted narrative on her public social media page, claiming she had been "viciously attacked and excluded by her in-laws during a vulnerable mental health crisis regarding her infertility." She alleged that my daughter had illegally recorded her in a private space and that I was using the situation to extort money from Garrett to pay off my divorce debts.
My phone rang continuously with calls from distant cousins and family friends asking what was happening.
"Don't answer them, Emily," my lawyer, Sarah, told me over a frantic phone consultation. I had hired her the moment I saw Jessica's post. "We have the original, unedited video from Melody's tablet. We have the physical heirloom. And we have the text messages Jessica sent Garrett this morning threatening to destroy the family property if he doesn't steal the tablet back."
"She threatened that?" I asked, my blood running cold.
"Garrett forwarded them to your father," Sarah explained. "Garrett left her last night. He’s staying at a motel near the interstate. He realized she's unhinged. But Jessica is desperate now. Her reputation in the community is everything to her, and she knows that video ruins her completely."
The situation escalated at 3:00 PM when a local sheriff's deputy pulled into my parents' driveway. Jessica had filed a formal complaint against me, alleging harassment and the unlawful interception of electronic communications regarding the video.

My father met the deputy at the porch, his old court demeanor fully active. He handed the deputy a copy of the appraisal for the emerald ring and a flash drive containing the footage of the theft.
"We aren't playing games anymore, Deputy," my father said, his voice ringing across the snow-covered yard. "Tell the prosecutor's office that the Romano-Caldwell family is filing formal charges for grand theft and child endangerment. The time for family loyalty ended when she attacked my grandchildren."
