Chapter 6 - The Broken Promise

In March, weeks before the trial was set to begin, Jessica broke her bail conditions.

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon. I was picking Tyler up from his pre-K program at the local church basement. The parking lot was filled with mothers rushing through the slush with umbrellas. As I buckled Tyler into his car seat, a shadow blocked the light from the open door.

I turned around, my heart leaping into my throat. Jessica was standing there. She looked completely different—her expensive clothes replaced by a faded sweatshirt, her hair greasy and pulled back, her eyes wide and wild.

"You think you won, Emily?" she whispered, her voice hissed against the wind. "You took my husband. You took my home. You took my freedom. You think that little digital toy your brat has is going to keep you safe?"

"Get away from my car, Jessica," I said, my voice shaking as I reached into my pocket for my phone. "The police will be here in three minutes if you don't step back."

"Your father can't save you forever," she snarled, stepping closer, her fingers clawing at the edge of the car door. "Your kids are nothing but broken pieces, just like their mother. You don't deserve—"

Before she could finish, the church pastor, a tall man named Father Thomas, stepped into the space between us, his massive umbrella blocking her view of Tyler. "Ma'am, you need to leave this property immediately. The authorities have already been alerted."

Jessica looked at the pastor, then at the phone in my hand, which was already connected to the emergency line. With an ugly, guttural sound, she turned and sprinted toward an old sedan parked across the street, speeding away into the rain.

The violation of her bail was absolute. By nightfall, Jessica was back in custody, this time held without bond until the trial date. The terror she had tried to inflict had only sealed her fate.
