Chapter 8 - The Day in Court

The trial in May was short. Faced with the mountain of financial fraud evidence, the bail violation, the video of the theft, and the newly discovered documents proving long-term malicious conspiracy, Jessica’s defense team abandoned any attempt to fight the charges. They negotiated a plea agreement to spare her the maximum sentence.
I stood at the prosecutor’s table, wearing my mother’s emerald ring on my right hand, looking directly at the woman who had terrorized my children.
"Do you have anything to say before sentencing, Jessica?" the judge asked, looking over his spectacles with absolute coldness.
Jessica stood up, her shoulders slumped, her eyes vacant. The arrogance was entirely gone, replaced by the hollow reality of a woman who had spent years building a prison out of her own hatred. "No, Your Honor," she whispered.
The judge slammed his gavel down. "For the charges of grand theft, criminal mischief, and stalking via bail violation, you are sentenced to five years at the Ohio Reformatory for Women, followed by mandatory restitution of forty-eight thousand dollars to Garrett Caldwell and Emily Romano. Let this be a reminder that family lines do not excuse criminal depravity."
As the bailiffs led her out through the side door, her handcuffs clicking against the wood, I felt a massive, invisible weight lift off my chest.

Garrett walked over to me from the gallery, offering his hand. "Can we start over, Emily? As brother and sister? No money, no wills, just... family?"
I looked at his tired face, seeing the brother I had grown up with before the greed had infected his home. I took his hand. "We can try, Garrett. Come over for Sunday dinner. The kids miss their uncle."
