Chapter 4 - The Gathering of Allies

The next morning, the storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, golden autumn day that did nothing to lighten the atmosphere inside the small law office of Elena Ruiz. Elena was an old family friend, a sharp, no-nonsense attorney who had spent her career fighting for the vulnerable in the public defender's office before transitioning into private family law.
I sat across from her desk, the leather notebook, the voice recorder, and the heavy manila envelope arranged neatly between us. Elena had been reading through the documents for over an hour, her reading glasses pushed up into her dark hair, her brow furrowed in deep concentration.
"Charles," Elena said, leaning back in her chair and letting out a long, heavy breath. "This isn't just a custody dispute. This is a massive, multi-jurisdictional criminal case. The financial records Rose gathered are pristine. She didn't just find clerical mistakes; she mapped out a systematic corporate embezzlement scheme that involves federal banking lines."
"Can we stop him from taking the girls?" I asked, my voice tight. "He announced at the funeral that he was handing them over to Child Protective Services on Monday. That's tomorrow."
Elena let out a sharp, humorless laugh. "Let him try. With this secret will and the audio recording of him explicitly threatening to abandon his children while committing physical assault against his bedridden wife, no family court judge in the state of Georgia will let him within a mile of those kids. I’ve already drafted the emergency petition for temporary guardianship. I’ll have a magistrate sign it by noon today."
"What about the criminal side?" I leaned forward, my hands resting on the desk. "I don't just want my granddaughters safe, Elena. I want him ruined. I want him to pay for what he did to Rose."
Elena’s eyes flashed with a dangerous, professional intensity. "For that, we need to bring in someone who deals in white-collar executions. The escrow funds Arthur stole belong to high-profile clients, including several former city officials. If we just hand this to the local police, Arthur’s corporate lawyers might find a way to delay the indictment until after he flees the country with Evelyn. We need to catch him at his most vulnerable moment."
"The wedding," I said softly, the realization blooming in my mind.
"Exactly," Elena nodded, a grim smile touching her lips. "He’s planning a high-society wedding to establish his financial stability and merge his firm with Evelyn's family's real estate empire. Her father is Marcus Sterling, the major political donor. If Sterling finds out Arthur is a fraudulent parasite before the vows are exchanged, he will pull his capital, and Arthur’s entire house of cards will implode in public."
The door to the office opened, and Lucy stepped in from the waiting room, where she had been watching over Rachel and April. She looked at Elena, then at me.
"Grandpa," Lucy said, holding a small tablet computer. "Dad just posted a public announcement on his social media page. He’s hosting a 'Pre-Wedding Celebration Gala' tonight at the Savannah Yacht Club. He wrote that he is 'entering a season of joy and rebirth after a long, tragic loss.'"

The sheer, unadulterated gall of the man was breathtaking. Rose had been under the dirt for less than twenty-four hours, and he was already parade-marching his new life in front of the city's elite.
I stood up, adjusting the collar of my coat. "Elena, file the custody papers immediately. Lucy, go back to your sisters. Tonight, we’re going to attend a gala."
