Chapter 9 - The Legacy Clinic

The autumn of 2026 arrived with a gentle, cool breeze that swept through the historic district, turning the leaves of the old oak trees into beautiful shades of crimson and gold. It was a milestone day for our family—the grand opening of the Rose Memorial Legal and Financial Clinic in downtown Savannah.

The clinic was funded entirely by the restoration of the girls' maternal grandmother’s inheritance trust, which Elena Ruiz had successfully insulated from Arthur’s corporate liquidation. It was designed to provide free forensic accounting services, legal aid, and family protection support for women and children who were facing economic abuse and domestic violence from powerful, wealthy predators.

I stood in the center of the beautiful, light-filled reception room, dressed in a sharp new suit. The walls were decorated with beautiful landscape photographs that Rose had taken during our family trips to the coast, her vibrant, creative spirit filling every corner of the space.

Elena Ruiz stood beside me, a glass of champagne in her hand, her face bright with an absolute professional triumph. "The clinic’s schedule is already booked for the next three months, Charles. We have six volunteer corporate lawyers and three forensic accountants from the university joining our staff next week. Rose’s name is going to save hundreds of lives in this city."

Lucy stood at the reception desk, wearing a neat professional blazer over her school dress, checking the digital intake forms with the clinical precision of a young woman who had found her true calling. She looked up as a young mother with a terrified little girl walked through the front doors, looking for help.

Lucy didn't hesitate. She stood up, walked around the desk, and took the young woman's hand in her own, offering her that same calm, unshakeable smile that had carried our family through the dark.

"Welcome to the Rose Clinic," Lucy said softly, her voice filled with a deep, mature empathy. "Don't worry. You're safe here. We know exactly how to balance the ledger."
