Chapter 10 - The Seat at the Table

The summer of 2026 reached its magnificent, golden peak in late July. The air inside the craftsman house was filled with the rich, comforting aromas of roasted chicken, fresh-baked cornbread, and sweet peach cobbler.

A massive new white oak dining table had been built in the center of the dining room—a table large enough to seat twelve people comfortably, its wood polished until it shone like gold under the warm light of the crystal chandelier.

Around the board sat the people who had formed the true fortress of our survival: Elena Ruiz, laughing as she shared a joke with my godmother; the old priest from the cemetery, his face relaxed and happy; and Thomas, the yard manager who had protected the girls during the dark days of the legal battle.

I sat at the head of the table, looking down the length of the crowded, vibrant room. To my right sat Lucy, her posture straight, her face beautiful and serene. Beside her sat Rachel, helping little April pour a glass of sweet lemonade into her cup.

There was no empty space at this table. There was no shadow of an arrogant man in a tailored gray suit, no phantom fear of a foster care system used as a threat to hollow out a child's worth. The black garbage bags of abandonment had been incinerated; the secret recordings had performed their final, devastating duty; and the ledger of our grief was permanently closed.

Lucy raised her glass, looking directly at me, her eyes shining with a deep, eternal affection. "A toast," she said, her voice steady and carrying through the warm room. "To our grandfather, Charles. The man who taught us that a seat at the table isn't something you're given by a monster—it's something you build with the people who love you. To Mom. To our family."

"To our family," the table echoed in a beautiful, unified chorus, their glasses meeting with a bright, musical ring that filled the high ceilings of the old house.

I smiled, my heart finally full, my fingers reaching out to touch the small, silver framed photograph of Rose that rested in the center of the table surrounded by white lilies. I took a slow sip of my tea, looked out the open windows at the beautiful Savannah night sky, and realized that the balance had been restored. The storm had passed, the children were home, and inside the light of our new life, the world was finally clean.
