Chapter 6 - The Forensic Noose

The following week, the small craftsman house in the historic district became a war room. The dining table was completely covered in stacks of bank ledgers, tax returns, and corporate routing maps. Rachel and April were in the backyard, playing quietly under the watchful eye of a private security guard I had hired using my savings, while Lucy sat beside me, her young fingers typing commands into a forensic accounting software program she had learned to use from a tutorial book Rose had hidden for her.
"Grandpa, look at this," Lucy said, pointing to the screen. "Every Thursday at 3:00 PM, Dad’s firm made an automatic transfer of fifty thousand dollars from the 'Coastal Preservation Escrow Account' to a private bank in Zurich, Switzerland. But the authorization code doesn't belong to the company vice president. It’s an old digital signature Mom used to have before she got sick."
I leaned over her shoulder, my eyes narrowing as I analyzed the data lines. Arthur hadn't just stolen the money; he had used his dying wife’s old digital corporate credentials to execute the fraudulent transactions, setting up a perfect frame job in case the federal auditors ever caught on. He was planning to blame the entire embezzlement scheme on a dead woman.
"He's a monster, Charles," Elena Ruiz said, walking into the dining room with a fresh stack of legal correspondence. "I just received a call from the District Attorney's office. The SEC has formally joined the investigation. Thanks to the documents Rose hid under the bed, the federal authorities have already flagged the Zurich account. They’re preparing a freezing order under the Patriot Act."
"What about Arthur?" I asked, my hands clenching into fists. "Is he trying to run?"
"He can't," Elena smiled grimly. "Marcus Sterling completely severed all ties with Vance Development Group two days ago. Arthur’s lines of credit have been terminated by every bank in the state. He’s currently trapped in his luxury penthouse, completely surrounded by creditors and private investigators representing the retirees he robbed. He’s desperate, Charles. His wedding to Evelyn is still scheduled for next Saturday, but it’s no longer a celebration—it’s his final, desperate attempt to marry into the Sterling fortune before the federal indictment lands."
The phone on the wall began to ring, its loud, old-fashioned bell echoing through the quiet house. I walked over and picked up the receiver.
"Charles," Arthur’s voice came through the line, sounding ragged, breathless, and completely unhinged. The smooth, confident son-in-law was gone; in his place was a trapped animal.
"Arthur," I said coldly.
"Listen to me, you old fool," Arthur panted, the sound of breaking glass audible in the background of his apartment. "I know you have the secondary ledger. I know Rose hid her corporate files at your place. I’ll make a deal with you. You hand over the ledger and the voice recordings, and I’ll sign a permanent, unconditional custody release for the girls. You can keep them forever. I won't ever look back. But if you don't hand them over by Friday night... I’ll release a statement to the press claiming that Rose was the one who stole the escrow funds, and I’ll ensure her memory is dragged through the mud forever."
I stood perfectly still, the cold fury inside me solidifying into an absolute, lethal calm. He was threatening to desecrate my daughter's grave to save his own skin.
"The wedding is Saturday morning at ten o'clock at the Historic Savannah Cathedral, right Arthur?" I asked, my voice entirely devoid of emotion.
"Yes! And I expect you to be there with the files, or I swear to God, I’ll destroy Rose's name before the sun goes down!" he screamed into the phone.

"Don't worry, Arthur," I said softly, looking down at Lucy, who was watching me with an expression of quiet defiance. "We'll be there. The entire family will be there. We wouldn't miss your wedding for the world."
I hung up the phone, turning to face Elena and Lucy. "Call the District Attorney, Elena. Tell them we have the precise time and location where Arthur Vance will attempt to execute his final corporate escape. We’re going to give him the high-society wedding he deserves."
