Chapter 2 - The Silent Drive

The drive home took forty minutes. Maya and Eli fell asleep in the backseat within the first ten.
Daniel kept his eyes on the road, his hands gripping the steering wheel at ten and two. The dashboard lights cast long shadows across his face.
"Fourteen years," Daniel finally said into the quiet of the car.
"I know."
"Fourteen years of biting my tongue when your dad makes jokes about the 'Parker clan' being bad at math, or your mom buys Lucy a three-hundred-dollar dress for Easter while Maya gets a book." Daniel let out a bitter laugh. "A book she already read."
"I should have pushed back harder," I said, staring out the window at the passing highway lights.
"No," Daniel reached over and squeezed my knee. "They are your parents. You are wired to seek their approval. You are wired to make excuses for them. But this? This isn't just a slip of the tongue at a photo shoot."
We did the math silently in our heads. If Mom and Dad had started those accounts when Owen was born ten years ago, and matched Mark's contributions... it was tens of thousands of dollars. Money meant for the future. Money meant to ease the burden of young adulthood.
A burden they were actively choosing to leave squarely on Maya and Eli's shoulders.

"What are you going to do?" Daniel asked.
"I’m going to invite them to dinner," I said. "Just the four of us."
