Chapter 8 - The Wake-Up Call

The turning point didn't come with fireworks or a dramatic confrontation. It came with a quiet, terrifying phone call in late January.

Dad had suffered a minor heart attack.

Mark called me from the hospital. "He's going to be fine. They caught it early, put a stent in. But Mom is a wreck."

Daniel and I drove to the hospital. When I walked into the cardiac recovery room, Dad looked small. The robust, booming patriarch who cared so much about his surname was just a fragile man in a faded hospital gown.

Mom was sitting in the chair next to the bed, holding his hand. When she saw me, she broke down completely.

"Sarah," she whispered, standing up and wrapping her arms around me. She felt frail.

I hugged her back. I loved them. I always had. Boundaries didn't erase love; they just required it to be healthy.

Dad opened his eyes and looked at me. Daniel stood quietly behind me, a steady presence.

"You came," Dad said, his voice raspy.

"Of course I came," I said, sitting on the edge of the bed.

Dad looked at the ceiling for a long time. The rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor filled the silence.

"I had a lot of time to think in the ambulance," Dad said slowly. "I was terrified. And the only thing I kept thinking was that if I died today, Maya and Eli would remember me as the grandfather who didn't want them in the picture."

A tear slipped down his weathered cheek.

"I'm sorry, Sarah," he choked out. "I was a foolish, proud old man. I was so obsessed with the past that I ruined my future."
