Chapter 3 - The Ledger of Legacy

On Tuesday night, my parents sat in my dining room.

I had made pot roast—Dad’s favorite. I waited until the plates were cleared, until the coffee was poured, until the ambient comfort of a family dinner had fully set in.

Then I placed my coffee cup down.

"Mark mentioned something interesting at the anniversary party," I said.

Mom smiled, oblivious. "Oh? Did he talk about the slideshow? He put so much work into that."

"He mentioned the 529 accounts," I said smoothly. "The ones you set up for Owen and Lucy."

The silence in the dining room was instantaneous. Dad put his coffee mug down. Mom's smile froze, turning brittle around the edges.

"Mark shouldn't be discussing his finances," Dad said gruffly, shifting in his chair.

"He wasn't discussing his finances, Dad. He was discussing what he thought were our finances. He was under the impression that you were matching contributions for Maya and Eli, just like you do for his kids."

Mom reached across the table, trying to pat my hand. I pulled it back.

"Sarah, honey," Mom started, her voice adopting that soothing, patronizing tone she used when I was a teenager. "You and Daniel do so well for yourselves. Daniel got that promotion last year, and Mark… well, Mark has always struggled a bit more with budgeting. We just wanted to make sure the Bennett name had a solid foundation."

Daniel spoke up, his voice like ice. "The Bennett name."

"It’s an old-fashioned thing, Daniel, surely you understand," Dad said, leaning forward. "Mark carries the family name. Owen is the only boy who will pass it on. It’s about legacy. It has nothing to do with how much we love Maya and Eli."

"Legacy?" I repeated, feeling the heat rise in my chest. "You are penalizing my children because I took my husband's last name? Because I'm a woman?"

May you like

"No one is penalizing anyone!" Dad raised his voice. "It’s our money, Sarah. We can do what we see fit."

"You absolutely can," I said, standing up from the table. "And I can decide who gets to be part of my children's lives. If Maya and Eli are second-class citizens in your legacy, they will no longer be participating in it."
