Chapter 5 - Unexpected Allies

Two weeks into the silence, my doorbell rang.

I opened it to find Anna, Mark’s wife, standing on my porch holding two bottles of expensive wine.

"Can I come in?" she asked.

Anna and I had always been cordial, but bounded by the polite distance of in-laws. We sat in my living room, and before I could even pour the wine, Anna burst into tears.

"I am so angry I could scream," she said, wiping her mascara.

She told me what happened after the anniversary party. When Mark realized there were no 529s for my kids, he went home and confronted Anna, assuming she had known. She hadn't.

"Your parents told us they were doing the exact same thing for you," Anna said, her voice shaking. "When Mark asked your dad about it on Sunday, your dad actually said, 'Mark needs to protect his own house and let us handle ours.'"

Anna looked at me, her expression hardening.

"They lied to us to prevent guilt."

"They used our kids as props for their ego."

"I will not let my children think they are superior to yours because of a last name."

"What did Mark say?" I asked quietly.

"Mark told them that if they didn't fix this, they wouldn't be seeing Owen and Lucy for Thanksgiving."

I stared at her, stunned. Mark, the golden boy, the keeper of the Bennett name, was drawing a line in the sand.
