Chapter 4 - The Threat from Within

I didn't make it out of the house unscathed. As I clutched the ledger to my chest, the front door clicked open. A man I recognized—one of Silas’s "business associates"—stepped into the foyer. He wasn't police. He was a professional cleaner.

"Mrs. Fletcher," he drawled, his hand moving toward his jacket. "Silas sent me to retrieve some personal effects."

I didn't hesitate. I threw the heavy steel box at his head, turned, and ran for the back exit. I knew the layout of this house better than anyone. I navigated the dark hallway, burst through the kitchen, and dove into the garden. I scrambled over the back fence just as a bullet shattered the wood where my head had been a second before. I kept running until I reached the main road, where Samantha was waiting.
