Chapter 10 - The True Vow

Two years later.

The summer sun was bright over our coastal Maine property.

There was a wedding taking place in our backyard, but it looked nothing like the opulent, tense gathering in Greenwich years ago. There were no two hundred fake friends, no string quartet playing corporate love songs, no white arches designed for photo opportunities.

Just twenty close friends and family sitting on wooden benches on the grass.

I stood near the water in a simple linen suit. Standing beside me was Sarah, wearing a simple, elegant floral dress—the kind of dress Ellie had loved when she was little.

And standing right beside Sarah, holding the ring box with a radiant, confident smile, was ten-year-old Ellie.

She wasn't hidden in a bathroom. She wasn't sitting in an empty front-row seat. She was standing right in the center of the ceremony, as the maid of honor and the center of our world.

When the minister asked for the rings, Ellie stepped forward proudly and handed them to us.

I looked down at my daughter, then at Sarah, and spoke the only wedding vow that truly mattered:

“I promise to love, to honor, and to protect this family—not with wealth or power, but with truth, openness, and unwavering devotion. No more secrets. No more fear.”

Sarah smiled through tears of joy, taking my hand. “I promise the same.”

As we kissed under the clear blue sky, the guests cheered, and Ellie threw a handful of flower petals into the ocean air, watching them float away on the tide.

I held my daughter’s hand on my right, and my wife’s hand on my left, standing in the bright sunlight where nothing was hidden, and where our family was finally whole.
