Chapter 5 - The War Begins

By Monday morning, the news of the canceled wedding had exploded across financial news outlets. Wall Street was buzzing with rumors that Callahan Enterprises was crumbling from within. Stock prices dropped eight percent in early trading as Hart Development publicly announced a hostile takeover bid, citing 'leadership instability' on my part.

I walked into Callahan Tower in Manhattan at 8:00 AM, flanked by Marcus and our top legal counsel.

The main boardroom on the 50th floor was packed with board members, all looking anxious. Sitting at the head of the long marble table, entirely uninvited, was Richard Hart himself, wearing a triumphant smile. Beside him sat Vanessa, looking cold and regal in a tailored ivory suit.

“Everett,” Richard said, rising slowly from his chair. “You made a dramatic scene at your house on Saturday. Very emotional. Very reckless. But emotion doesn't run corporations.”

“Get out of my seat, Richard,” I said quietly.

Vanessa smirked. “You don't own that seat anymore, Everett. My father bought up eleven percent of Callahan shares over the weekend through secondary markets. Combined with our institutional partners, we now hold a voting controlling stake.”

“You’re attempting a hostile takeover based on stolen capital,” Marcus interjected, tossing a leather briefcase onto the center of the table.

Richard laughed, a dry, harsh sound. “Stolen? Prove it. You have nothing but rumors and the ramblings of a traumatized little girl who didn't want a stepmother.”

“We’re not talking about Ellie,” I said.

I opened the briefcase and pulled out a stack of certified legal documents, sealed with the official stamp of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

“These are the certified medical logs from the safety deposit box of Nurse Clara Vance,” I said, sliding the pages across the smooth marble table toward the board members.

Richard’s smile flickered.

“Along with this,” I continued, dropping a flash drive onto the table, “is a signed audio confession from Clara Vance, detailing how Hart Development transferred over $400,000 into her offshore accounts in exchange for falsifying my late wife’s trial eligibility documents.”

The board members immediately leaned in, picking up the papers. Mutterings swept through the room like wildfire.

“This is a fake!” Vanessa shouted, standing up so fast her chair slid back. “Father, tell them!”

Richard’s face lost all its color. He looked at the documents, his eyes darting frantically across the medical stamps and wire transfer receipts.

“Furthermore,” I added, leaning forward over the table, “two hours ago, federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York issued an emergency freeze on all Hart Development assets under the RICO Act, pending an investigation into corporate manslaughter and bribery.”

The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open. Four uniformed FBI agents stepped into the room, accompanied by the United States Attorney.

“Richard Hart? Vanessa Hart?” the lead agent announced, pulling out a set of handcuffs. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate fraud, and obstruction of justice.”
