Chapter 2 - The Public Reckoning

When I stepped out through the French doors onto the manicured lawn, the string quartet trailed off into an awkward silence.
The guests began to whisper. I wasn't wearing my jacket; my tie was loosened, and instead of standing at the altar waiting for a bride, I was carrying my daughter, who was clinging tightly to my neck.
Marcus stepped forward immediately, his face pale. “Everett, what’s going on? Vanessa’s father is looking at me like he’s about to call his legal team.”
“Let him,” I said loudly enough for the front three rows to hear.
Vanessa burst through the doors behind me. Her veil was slightly crooked, and tears of rage were ruining her perfectly applied makeup. “Everett, please! Talk to me in private! Don't do this to us!”
Her father, Richard Hart, a ruthless real estate mogul with silver hair and an expression made of granite, stood up from his front-row seat. “Callahan! What is the meaning of this embarrassment?”
I walked directly to the microphone set up at the head of the aisle, right next to the floral arch. I didn't set Ellie down; I kept her close to my chest, letting her know she was safe.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” I said, my voice echoing through the outdoor speakers. The courtyard went deathly quiet. “Thank you all for coming to Greenwich today. I apologize for the inconvenience, but there will be no wedding.”
Gasps erupted through the crowd. Phones were pulled out instantly, despite the explicit 'no photography' rule.
“Everett, shut your mouth!” Richard Hart barked, taking a step toward the altar.
“Five years ago, I made a promise to my late wife that I would protect our family,” I continued, ignoring Richard completely. “Today, I discovered that my fiancé and her family have been attempting to systematically dismantle my daughter's legal rights and access my late wife's estate trust.”
I held up the black accordion folder for everyone—and the inevitable hidden cameras—to see.
“The Hart family didn't want a marriage,” I declared. “They wanted a corporate takeover disguised as a family unit. The ceremony is concluded. Drinks are on me, but I ask that you all vacate my property within the hour.”
Vanessa shrieked, a sound of pure venom, and threw her peony bouquet directly at my feet. “You’ll regret this, Everett! You have no idea what my father holds over you! You think Hannah died naturally? You think her hospice care was just bad luck? Check the records, Everett! Check who paid her nurses!”
The entire garden gasped. The silence that followed was suffocating.
My blood ran ice cold. “What did you say?”
Richard grabbed Vanessa fiercely by the arm, jerking her backward. “Shut up, you fool!” he spat at his daughter, before glaring back at me. “We’re leaving, Callahan. But this isn't over. Your company will be bankrupt by Monday morning.”
As the Harts retreated toward the estate gates, flanked by their security detail, the guests began to scatter in total chaos. Marcus ran up to the altar, his hands shaking.
“Everett... what did she mean about Hannah?” Marcus whispered, his eyes wide with fear.

I looked down at Ellie. She was staring at me with huge, frightened eyes.
“Marcus,” I said, my voice dangerously calm. “Call our private investigators. Get every single medical file from Hannah’s final six months. I want names, bank statements, and every phone call Richard Hart made in five years.”
