Chapter 4 - The Vanishing Nurse

Within twelve hours, my private security team tracked Clara Vance’s past financial records. She hadn't moved abroad permanently; she had been living in a small coastal town in Maine under her maiden name, receiving monthly wire transfers from an offshore shell company linked directly to Richard Hart.

By noon the next day, Marcus and I were on a private jet to Portland, Maine, followed by a two-hour drive to a remote cottage overlooking the stormy Atlantic.

The sky was overcast, heavy with gray rain clouds, when we pulled up to the weathered wooden house. I stepped out of the SUV, my coat collar pulled up against the cold wind.

I knocked on the door.

A middle-aged woman opened it moments later. When she saw my face, the color drained instantly from her cheeks. She dropped the bag of groceries she was holding; apples and canned goods rolled across the porch floor.

“Mr... Mr. Callahan,” she stuttered, stepping back.

“Hello, Clara,” I said calmly, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation. Marcus followed, shutting the door firmly behind us. “We need to talk about my wife.”

Clara began to tremble violently. “I don't know anything! I left your employment five years ago! I signed a non-disclosure agreement—”

“You signed an agreement with a murderer,” I said, stepping closer. “Richard Hart paid you to manipulate Hannah’s medical charts, didn't he? He paid you to alter her dosage records so she wouldn't qualify for the BioGenesis experimental trial.”

Clara sank onto a small wooden chair, burying her face in her hands. She began to sob uncontrollably.

“I didn't know they were going to let her die!” Clara wept. “They told me it was just for business competition! They said Mrs. Callahan was going to pass away eventually anyway, and that stopping the trial would just speed up the process by a few months! I needed the money for my son’s surgery!”

“Where is the original chart, Clara?” Marcus demanded, pulling a recorder from his pocket.

“I kept it,” she whispered, tears streaming down her face. “I knew Richard Hart was a monster. I kept the original un-altered blood work and doctor’s notes in a safety deposit box in Boston. If anything ever happened to me, my lawyer was instructed to release it.”

“You’re going to give us that key,” I said, my voice low and steady. “And then you’re going to step into a courtroom and tell a federal prosecutor every single word you just told us.”

“If I do that, Hart will kill me!” she cried.

“If you don't,” I replied coldly, “I will personally ensure you spend the rest of your life in maximum-security prison as an accessory to premeditated murder. Choose.”

Clara wiped her eyes with a trembling sleeve, stood up, and walked over to a small floor safe hidden inside her closet.
