Chapter 5 - The First Summer

Three months passed.

The toxic gloom that had hung over the Whitman estate vanished like morning fog under a bright summer sun.

Under Clara’s guidance, the cold, rigid rules imposed by Eleanor Vance were completely dismantled. The heavy velvet drapes in the nursery were replaced with bright, sunlit linen curtains. The silent, formal dinners were replaced with chaotic, joyful family meals in the kitchen, where flour occasionally ended up on the floor during weekend baking sessions.

Derek restructured his entire life at Whitman International. He promoted his senior vice president to handle daily operations, stepping back from the grueling eighty-hour work weeks. For the first time in his career, Derek was home by four o'clock every afternoon.

On a warm Saturday afternoon in July, the sprawling backyard of the estate was alive with sound.

The green lawn sparkled under the summer sun as a large inflatable water slide sat near the swimming pool. Finn, Eli, and Jasper—now healthy, energetic, and sporting bright summer tans—were splashing around in their brightly colored swim trunks, their squeals of delight echoing through the trees.

Derek sat on a wooden lounge chair near the grass, dressed in a casual polo shirt and shorts, a smile permanently etched onto his face as he watched his sons.

Clara stood near the water slide, holding a yellow towel, laughing as Jasper attempted to slide down backward.

"Jasper Whitman, don't you dare slide on your stomach!" Clara called out playfully, shaking her head. "You're going to splash me again!"

"Target locked on Clara!" Jasper yelled, launching himself down the slide and sending a massive wave of water splashing directly over Clara’s dress.

Clara gasped in mock outrage, wiping water from her face while Finn and Eli cheered wildly from the grass.

Derek laughed aloud—a deep, genuine laugh that felt completely natural now. He stood up, grabbing two large water buckets from the patio, and walked over to the grass.

"Retaliation force incoming!" Derek shouted, dumping a bucket of warm pool water over Jasper’s head while Clara grabbed a second bucket and chased Finn around the lawn.

For two glorious hours, the billionaire CEO, the young guardian, and the three boys played in the water until all five of them were completely exhausted, collapsing onto a large picnic blanket spread across the grass.

The three boys lay between Derek and Clara, munching on watermelon slices, their small bodies warm and content under the late afternoon sun.

Finn rested his head against Derek’s chest, while Eli snuggled against Clara’s side, holding her hand.

"Daddy?" Finn asked softly, looking up at the sky.

"Yes, buddy?" Derek replied, stroking his son’s damp hair.

"Are we going to stay happy like this forever?"

Derek felt a lump form in his throat. He looked over Finn’s head at Clara, who was watching him with soft, tender eyes.

"Yes, Finn," Derek said, his voice thick with emotion. "We are going to stay happy. I promise you."

Jasper sat up, looking at Clara with wide, innocent eyes. "Clara? Can you live with us forever? Like a real part of our family?"

Clara’s hand froze for a second on Eli’s head. A subtle blush rose on her cheeks as she looked across the blanket at Derek.

Over the past three months, the boundaries between employer and employee had blurred into something far deeper, warmer, and more profound. Derek had learned about Clara’s past—how her mother had passed away from illness, how her father had struggled as a carpenter in town, and how she had put her own college dreams on hold to work and pay off her family's debts.

In turn, Clara had seen the real Derek Whitman: not the cold, intimidating corporate billionaire portrayed in business magazines, but a devoted, protective father who had carried a crushing burden of grief entirely alone until she came into his life.

"I... I’m already here every day, Jasper," Clara said softly, her voice filled with gentle affection.

"That's not what I mean!" Jasper insisted, waving his watermelon slice. "Like... living here always! With Daddy!"

Derek looked at Clara, his heart beating with a rapid, nervous rhythm he hadn't felt in years. He reached out across the grass, his large, warm hand covering Clara’s hand where it rested on the picnic blanket.

Clara didn't pull away. She looked into Derek’s dark, intense eyes, finding an unwritten promise that made her breath catch.

"We'll see, sweetie," Derek said softly to Jasper, never breaking eye contact with Clara. "We'll see."
