Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Dark

While happiness had returned to the Whitman estate, dark clouds were quietly gathering on the horizon.

In a penthouse apartment overlooking Central Park, Eleanor Vance sat at a glass desk, her eyes cold and calculating as she looked across at Richard Sterling—a ruthless corporate raider and major minority shareholder in Whitman International.

Richard Sterling had been trying to launch a hostile takeover of Whitman International for two years, but Derek’s firm control over his family’s fifty-one percent stock majority had kept Sterling at bay.

"You're sure about this, Eleanor?" Sterling asked, swirling scotch in a crystal tumbler. "If we launch a public smear campaign accusing Derek of child neglect and romantic misconduct with his household staff, it could drop the company’s stock price by fifteen percent overnight."

"I am entirely sure," Eleanor said, her voice laced with bitter hatred. "Derek threw me out of my own grandchildren's lives for a twenty-four-year-old maid. He has isolated those boys, brought a low-class woman into the estate, and abandoned his corporate duties to play house in Greenwich."

She slid a manila folder across the glass desk. Inside were surveillance photographs taken by a private investigator showing Derek and Clara laughing in the backyard, playing in the water with the boys, and walking hand-in-hand through the garden at dusk.

"The media will love this story," Eleanor sneered, a cruel smile touching her lips. "Grieving billionaire neglects his corporate duties and falls for his children's nanny while keeping his late wife’s family barred from the estate. We file a petition with the family court to revoke his custody based on emotional instability, while you launch the board vote to remove him as CEO."

Sterling looked through the photographs, a cold smirk spreading across his face. "This is potent, Eleanor. The board of directors is already nervous about Derek’s reduced hours. If we present this at the annual shareholder summit next month, we can force him out."

"I don't care about the board, Richard," Eleanor stated, her eyes burning with vengeful triumph. "I want my grandchildren’s trust fund, and I want Derek Whitman destroyed."

Three weeks later, the storm hit without warning.

It was a rainy Tuesday morning when Derek arrived at his Manhattan office building, only to be swarmed by dozens of news reporters and flashing cameras at the entrance.

"Mr. Whitman! Is it true you’ve engaged in an improper relationship with your children’s nanny?" "Derek! Are the rumors true that your mother-in-law has filed for legal custody of the triplets?" "Is Whitman International facing a board revolt over your leadership?"

Derek pushed through the flashing cameras, flanked by his security team, his face set in a hard, unyielding mask.

Inside his executive office on the fiftieth floor, his senior vice president, Marcus, and his legal team were waiting anxiously around the conference table.

"It’s a coordinated hit, Derek," his chief legal officer announced, throwing a copy of the New York Post onto the table. The front-page headline read in bold black letters: BILLIONAIRE'S SECRET ESTATE: CUSTODY BATTLE BREWS OVER WHITMAN TRIPLETS.

"Eleanor Vance filed an emergency petition with the Manhattan Family Court this morning," Marcus reported grimly. "She’s claiming you are emotionally unfit, using heavy narcotics, and allowing an unvetted domestic worker to manage the boys' daily lives. At the same time, Richard Sterling called an emergency board meeting for Friday morning to vote on your removal as CEO."

Derek stood at the floor-to-ceiling window, staring out at the rain-soaked skyline of Manhattan. He felt a familiar, cold rage rising within him, but unlike eight months ago, he was no longer a broken man drowning in grief.

He had something worth fighting for.

"Call Marcus Vance," Derek commanded calmly, turning around to face his legal team. "Tell him to pull every financial record, every offshore bank account, and every wire transaction connected to Richard Sterling and Eleanor Vance over the last five years."

"What are you planning, Derek?" his attorney asked.

Derek’s dark eyes flashed with an absolute, lethal determination. "They think they can use my family to take my company. On Friday morning... I am going to end Richard Sterling’s career, and put Eleanor Vance where she belongs permanently."
