Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Siege

On Friday morning at nine o'clock, the high-stakes battle moved to the fiftieth floor of the Whitman International Tower in Wall Street.
The executive boardroom was tense. Twelve board members sat around the massive oval glass table. At the head of the table sat Richard Sterling, looking confident and victorious, flanked by his corporate attorneys.
Derek Whitman walked into the room, dressed in a bespoke dark navy suit, his posture radiating absolute, unshakeable authority. Beside him walked Clara, wearing an elegant cream-colored suit, carrying a leather portfolio.
Sterling smirked, swirling his coffee. "Derek. I see you brought your... personal assistant to a board meeting. Isn't that somewhat unprofessional?"
Several older board members chuckled nervously, but Derek remained completely unfazed. He pulled out a leather chair for Clara, then took his seat at the opposite end of the table.
"Let's skip the pleasantries, Richard," Derek said calmly, placing his hands flat on the glass table. "You called this emergency meeting to vote on my removal as Chairman and CEO."
"Indeed I did, Derek," Sterling said, standing up and buttoning his jacket. "Under your recent... absent leadership, Whitman International’s stock has fluctuated wildly. Your personal life has become a public circus, and the board can no longer tolerate the reputational risk. I move for an immediate vote of no confidence."
"Seconded," one of Sterling’s allied board members called out.
"Before we vote," Derek said, his voice quiet, deep, and commanding, "I believe the board should review the quarterly asset report Miss Winslow has prepared."
Sterling laughed condescendingly. "What does a maid know about corporate assets?"
Clara stood up gracefully, her voice calm, clear, and articulate as she opened her portfolio.
"Mr. Sterling," Clara said, looking him dead in the eye, "while you were spending the last three weeks orchestrating a smear campaign with Eleanor Vance, Mr. Whitman was quietly executing a strategic acquisition of Sterling Logistics' primary debt bonds."
Sterling’s smirk vanished instantly. "What?"
"As of six o'clock this morning," Clara announced, projecting a financial document onto the boardroom screen, "Whitman International holds sixty-one percent of your company's short-term debt obligations. Furthermore, we have uncovered evidence that you used company funds to bribe a family court litigant—a severe violation of federal SEC regulations."
The board members gasped, leaning forward to inspect the screen.
"Richard Sterling," Derek stated, standing up and towering over the table, "you are currently in default on forty million dollars in debt owed directly to Whitman International. Effective immediately, I am calling those loans due."
Sterling turned as white as a sheet, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the table. "You... you can't do this! That will bankrupt my firm!"
"Then I suggest you sell your board seat back to Whitman International for ten cents on the dollar," Derek replied coldly, stepping closer to him. "Because if you don't sign the transfer agreement within five minutes, my legal team will file bankruptcy enforcement proceedings and submit these SEC violation documents to the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
Sterling looked around the boardroom, desperate for support, but every single board member turned their head away, refusing to make eye contact with a ruined man.
Realizing he was completely trapped, Sterling’s knees buckled. He sank back into his chair, taking a pen with trembling fingers, and signed the stock transfer documents laid out before him.
"Get out of my building, Richard," Derek commanded softly.
Sterling gathered his papers in utter disgrace and hurried out of the boardroom, flanked by his bewildered attorneys.
The remaining board members stood up, breaking into enthusiastic applause, raising their glasses to toast Derek’s brilliant, decisive victory.
Derek turned to Clara, who was smiling radiantly beside him. He took her hand in front of the entire board of directors, raising it to his lips and pressing a gentle kiss onto her knuckles.

"Thank you, partner," Derek whispered warmly.
Clara’s heart soared, knowing that together, they had dismantled every enemy that had dared to threaten their family.
